Just do it

I talk too much, laugh too loud and worry too often.

But if you need me, I’ll be there. I won’t let you down and I will always be kind.

I hope that makes up for the other three things …

But I’ve learned that having my heart in the right place doesn’t guarantee anything.

Not everyone in this world is going to like or accept me. And while that stings a little sometimes, my actions aren’t determined by how I’m treated in return.

There’s a Doctor Who episode called “The Beast Below”, it’s about spaceship guided by a creature called the Star Whale, which is tortured by the crew to keep the ship moving.

The Doctor and his companion Amy make the horrifying discovery that the Star Whale doesn’t need to be tortured to perform its duties.

Amy tells the crew: “The Star Whale didn’t come like a miracle all those years ago. It volunteered. You didn’t have to trap it or torture it. That was all just you. It came because it couldn’t stand to watch your children cry. What if you were really old and really kind and alone—your whole race dead, no future. What could you do then? If you were that old and that kind, and the very last of your kind, you couldn’t just stand there and watch children cry.”

I can’t imagine being so unselfish and forgiving, but I find the Star Whale’s kindness quite remarkable.

In a later episode, the Doctor had this to say about his own kindness: ““Winning? Is that what you think it’s about? I’m not trying to win. I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works because it hardly ever does. I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind! It’s just that … Just kind.”

I’m with him on that, 100%.

And my hope for 2019 is that people do what is right because it is decent and it is kind. Not because it is easy and definitely not because it will be fun.

Don’t do it in expectation of receiving kindness in return. Don’t do it in expectation of anything. Just do it.

And I promise you’ll feel better for it.

Happy New Year, have a fabulous 2019.

  1. Your sentiments are lovely. I like the Doctor Who story of the star whale, it sums up what is right (and wrong) with this world well. There’s nowt as queer as folk, as we say, and there’s no accounting for why some people are crap humans and others give, give and give a bit more. Thank heavens there are some of us who know what’s right and how to behave to our fellow humans, animals and this earth. We don’t have to be saints every day, in fact I know I do things wrong some days and have regrets. Just try to be nice, kindness cost nothing. The reward is definitely the buzz from making a person feel better or doing the right thing and that’s enough.

    Have a fabulous 2019 yourself 🙂
