Honey, I’m home!

Today is Husband-turns-housewife day. I’m very excited. Wednesdays were supposed to be Husband-and-I-rediscover-why-we-love-each-other days, but who’s to argue when an old work colleague is over my side of town and fancies yum cha? I’ve kicked things off by making Husband drop the kids at school (to be fair, he does that every Wednesday, but I need material). They departed with the usual tirades of “You’ve lost your jacket AGAIN?” and “I said GET in the car!”. And now the house is blissfully quiet for 20 minutes. Ahhhh. I’ve booked the dishwasher repair man to come between 10am and 2pm. Husband is worried dishwasher repair man will be disappointed when he arrives expecting sexy housewife (what a sweet, deluded man I’ve married) and gets grouchy Husband instead. I’ve instructed Husband to make pizza dough for dinner while he waits for repair man. Husband makes good pizza dough. At 3pm, Husband will pick up the Sprogs from school and take Sprog 2 to soccer practice. At 4.45pm he will take the Sprogs to swimming lessons. I’m hoping to stay home, too busy arranging pieces of ham, salami, cheese, carrot and pineapple in bowls so the Sprogs can decorate their pizzas. I may even make Husband wash the Sprogs hair when they return. I just need to manufacture a kitchen crisis that needs fixing at that precise moment. Husband will be exhausted because he’s had a hard day at home (rather than a hard day at the office). It’s a good thing there are still some of those beers left from yesterday. Actually, they’re all left, because Husband decided it was sad to drink beer on a Tuesday. Well, there’s a first time for everything. I suspect it’s actually because of yesterday’s blog. Husband thinks I made myself sound like a desperate alcoholic. That would add a certain drama to my life that is currently lacking, but I’m not sure three glasses of wine several times a week qualifies me.

TONIGHT’S MENU: Homemade pizzas (Husband & Sprogs), ma po do fu (carb-intolerant me – ooh, there’s my kitchen crisis!).

  1. Alana, does this mean you can never again eat bread, rice, pasta, potatoes etc? Lordy, that must be tough. Is there any flexibility, or do carbs of any kind make you sick? Can’t imagine wiping out a whole food group.

    1. It’s actually complex sugars that are the problem, which cuts out virtually everything. Very dull. I can actually tolerate a few carbs these days with only minor side-effects, but I’m too scared to carb-binge as I was really, really sick a few years ago before I was diagnosed.

      1. ACK. What patience you must have. Is it a missing enzyme thing, like lactose intolerance? What does your body burn for energy? (Sorry for all the questions, thinking out loud, and I’ve always been totally obsessed with medical stuff.) Getting a kick out of your blog, btw. Always nice to take a peek into someone else’s quotidian life. And the frankness is refreshing.

      2. Yes, 3 missing enzymes for lactose, maltose and sucrose (I think those were the three …). I eat lots of protein and can have simple sugars like honey. Glad you like the blog. Is very nice to be writing again.
