I haven’t worked at Woman’s Day for more than 15 years, but the magazine dominated my conversations and thoughts yesterday.
During a morning meeting, someone wondered if Woman’s Day still existed. I decided against mentioning my prior connection to the publication, but assured everyone that it was still on shelves.
As I scrolled through my Facebook feed at lunchtime, a surprising item caught my eye about actor Jack Quaid and his “The Boys” co-star Claudia Doumit exchanging vows in the NSW town of Braidwood.
The couple, both 33, tied the knot at Mona Farm, which is located about an hour’s drive from Canberra. A-list guests included Quaid’s parents, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, as well as Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, Alec Baldwin, Henry Golding … and … my former Woman’s Day beauty editor Mary Zavaglia, who just happens to be Claudia’s mother!
About five years after I left Woman’s Day, Mary left her long-tenure as beauty editor of the magazine to chaperone Claudia in Hollywood on her quest to be a star.
I haven’t spoken to Mary for a few years, but she must be so proud of her talented daughter. And imagine being mother of the bride at a wedding featuring all those big names!
Mary is a wonderful hair and make-up artist … I wonder if that was also among her official duties on the day?
Last night, I caught up with a few ex-magazine friends for dinner, with discussion of Claudia’s nuptials among the topics explored!
It reminded me that I had another weird celebrity connection. When I was editing Woman’s Day, I shared a nanny with one of the magazine’s designers. Her son had also set his sights on Hollywood and starred in Gilmour Girls!
Gilmour Girls went on to become the youngest’s favourite TV show, but not because she’d met Tanc when she was a toddler. Oddly she was completely unfazed by that claim to fame. So weird.
Anyways, there are more six-degrees-of-separation Woman’s Day moments in my near future. Stay tuned!
