I said no

While it’s great that I set a boundary and said no to attending an office social club gathering last night, I felt like a bit of a heel.

I should really have made an effort. But I am still pretty knackered from the weekend and I needed to grab supplies from the supermarket to feed the eldest’s two friends who appear to have moved in with us, get some eczema ointment for the youngest and sit down to dinner with her for once in a blue moon.

The youngest made fresh pasta with tomato and basil sauce, which was very tasty.

The social club also held a Halloween bake sale yesterday, which was another tricky one. I should have said no to that too as I am getting quite chonky in my middle age.

But my workmate Billy said the warm custard filo pastries were a die-die-must-try, so I headed up to the office kitchen and bought one, inhaling it before I even made it back to my desk.

My boss had also set up an elaborate Halloween treats table in the office and was a bit crestfallen that most of the lollies and chocolates were still there at the end of the day, so I felt obliged to have one of those as well.

The diet starts today … she said for the gazillionth time.

Meanwhile DD was being a pillar of health in the lounge at the airport in Tokyo, eating sushi. He’s now winging his way to New York before driving to Philadelphia.

While I miss him, I don’t envy doing that trip.

Oh and guess what I found on my doorstep yesterday morning? A Christmas beetle! It swept me right back to my childhood.

I picked it up and put it in the garden to ensure no one stepped on it, because Christmas beetles are getting very rare in suburbia.

According to Chris Reid, Principal Research Scientist at the Australian Museum: “The evidence suggesting a decline is anecdotal yet compelling. In the 1920s, they were reported to drown in huge numbers in Sydney Harbour, with tree branches bending into the water under the sheer weight of the massed beetles. You won’t see that these days, and I’ve never seen a Christmas Beetle come to light where I work, next to Hyde Park.”

I’m hoping the one I spotted is a good omen.

OK, I’d better get cracking on the day, which kicks off with yet another medical appointment for the youngest.

  1. this just came to me….the Joe Cross, the sick fat and nearly guys an Aussie?…I’ve been thinking a lot lately of getting back into juicing, that may be why I thought of that, but after Halloween….but yeah, I need a diet, a new one….this one isn’t working…and how many small candy bars equals one normal sized one?

      1. He put out a couple of videos years ago when the fad was all about juicing….I think he was a successful businessman in the land down under…..but he did this cross-country trip of the USA promoting the change…he was in the vid called Hungry for Change as well….I think at the time everyone I know bought juicers, and we raided the veggie sections (I discovered that there was more than one type of Kale!)…..it was a lot of work, but learned that you could get juice out of things like yams and sweet potatoes, and loved juicing red peppers….my diet right now is well, mostly Halloween candy. But not really good…so, time to revisit that juicer
you have a lot of answer for actually…everytime I read your blog, everytime, I start digging through vinyl and itunes and netflix…back in 1986, when I lived on the west coast, expo 86 in vancouver, it was a time when everything was Austrailia…we all drank Fosters, listened to Midnight Oil and Men at Work, Paul Hogan was on our TVs all the time and yes at the Aussie pavilion…..there were so many movies – coca cola kid, and something about a aboriginal girl that that I can’t remember the name of…..and now, well…..I’ve got the Waifs cranked (crazy train), and I think a song about living next door to alice…..and I’m searching for a movie about an all female black band that toured Austrailia at some point……I don’t drink beer anymore, but am now searching Aussie wine?….
