I can’t quite believe I’m writing the words: Prince Rogers Nelson has died at age 57.
“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning,” his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said.
Police responded to a medical call and found the singer unresponsive in an elevator at his home.
The music world is reeling and so are his fans.
Some are saying his death “is what it sounds like when doves cry.”
Do you have a memory of the singer you’ll never forget?
For me, it was dancing with delirious joy at midnight on New Year’s Eve 1999, at the dodgy old Crazy Horse Nightclub in Newcastle, to his iconic song “1999”.
I didn’t ever get the chance to see him in concert, I’m told he was brilliant.
But so many of his songs defined my teens and early 20s.
I can’t quite believe 2016 has stolen both David Bowie and Prince and it’s not even May yet.
RIP Prince.
Here are many of the celebrity outpourings of grief on Instagram:
Song of the day: Prince “Cream”
Such sad news he is a musical genius! My memories are much like yours but his music from the Batman movie. I used to have a job that I travelled into the city listening to that tape and reading a book about Marilyn every time I hear that music I’m transported back to the train.
I can remember a time when we couldn’t quite get our heads around that 1999 would actually happen lol, it seemed like it was a lifetime away when it was released!
I’d forgotten how long it was between the song coming out and the actual night! No wonder I was so euphoric!
