Melbourne, you sexy beast!

Flying to Melbourne for the weekend less than a week after getting home from our Northern NSW jaunt isn’t the most genius planning we’ve ever done in the Household … But it’s worked out remarkably well.

Melbourne is home to The Cousins and the eldest is a member of The Young Australian Broadway Chorus, who were performing Joseph And His Technicolour Dreamcoat at the Malthouse Theatre. So naturally we wanted to go along and lend a little applause.

They did an AMAZING job: around 80 kids aged from 10 to 19 sang and danced their hearts out.

The costumes were stunning and the performances were excellent. Our poor Cousin had a terrible flu but you wouldnt have known it as she powered through the show (and got one of the biggest laughs for her role as a camel … She was also a very glamorous go-go girl, it wasn’t all furry hijinks).

After the final curtain call we headed to Federation Square for a gelato to beat the 36 degree heat (yep, we chose a scorcher weekend for our visit: its going to be 43 degrees today … Sob) then took a twirl around ACMI which has the most fantastic exhibition on – Spectacle.

It’s closing on February 23, but if you get a chance go and see it because it’s brilliant. It’s a series of rooms showing music video clips that range from the 1930s to the present day. We only had just over an hour to explore before it closed for the day and it wasn’t enough time to fully appreciate the 300 music videos explored through photography stills, video projections, recreated sets and interactive installations.

The youngest loved the interactive videos by Arcade Fire, and was particularly dazzled by the one where you typed in your address and the man in the video jogged to your house and stood out the front. Spooky!

The eldest was jazzed to see videos from her new favourite singer, David Bowie.

I would have been happy to stand watching videos on the giant screen for hours (I also saw my first Kanye video – amazing, but geez he’s an egotistical tosser).

We crossed the road afterwards for nom nom tapas at Movida Next Door, paired with lethal red sangria. The hangar steak was the most heavenly piece of protein I’ve had in a long time.

Then it was back to The Cousins for a swim that stretched until dark. OK, I didn’t exactly have a swim. I watched other people swimming while I lay on a trampoline sipping All Saints chenin blanc. Niiiiice.

A pretty near perfect day. Thank you Melbourne.
