Working in a government department before caretaker mode is VERY hectic.
In the lead-up to the 2023 general election, something called the ‘caretaker period’ commences when the Legislative Assembly expires on Friday, 3 March 2023.
As a general rule, no significant new decisions or initiatives, appointments or contractual undertakings should be made by government departments during the caretaker period.
It also means that from tomorrow I won’t be publishing any newsletters or social media posts.
Caretaker mode will continue until the new government is sworn in, so it has been pretty frenzied this week as everyone tries to squeeze as much in as possible.
My brain is fried. I have written so many LinkedIn posts that I am lost for words. I was a bit punch drunk as I ate a quick dinner last night at the pub with my sister.
So all I have for you today is a recipe. It’s a variation on a Nudie one I found in a Coles magazine. It’s a keeper.
Forgive the crappy pic.

Orange spiced couscous & salmon salad
1 sweet potato, peeled and diced
1 & 1/2 cups wholemeal couscous
1 & 1/2 cups orange juice
4 skinless salmon portions
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
Block of fetta, crumbled
1 cup pomegranate seeds
2 tbsps toasted pinenuts
Handful of mint, chopped
DRESSING
2 tbsps orange juice
2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp Bahrat spice mix
1 garlic clove, crushed
METHOD: Heat oven to 180C, toss sweet potato in a little oil and roast until golden. Cool slightly. Heat orange juice to almost boiling, pour over couscous, stir and cover for five minutes, then fluff with a fork and allow to cool slightly.
Grill salmon and flake into chunks.
Toss pinenuts, onion, mint, pomegranate seeds and fetta through couscous. Gently toss through salmon and sweet potato. Mix together dressing ingredients and drizzle over the top. Serve.
Very yummy the next day too.
Today will be full on. There is still so much to do. And then I am hoping for a bit of breathing space to recalibrate.
I am also thinking I might take some time off during caretaker period to recover … stay tuned …
