Smells like trouble

The eldest is circling the drain of illness with me. We’ve both been struggling to recover for the better part of a month. I’m blaming it on us burning the candle at both ends.

The eldest has probably done more fun candle burning than me, but they are also working quite a few 9.30pm to 4.30pm shifts at the pub, which is not aiding a swift recovery.

As for me, I get slowly better each day, but my throat and nose are still a bit funny and my resilience isn’t what it should be.

Speaking of burning, I keep smelling wood smoke, which Dr Google tells me can be a sign of long COVID or a tumour.

(This is why DD tells me not to consult with Dr Google.)

I got worried after reading that, so I walked outside to confirm it was ACTUAL wood smoke I was smelling.

It is and I can’t stand it. It is in my lungs and my throat and my nostrils. I have never previously noticed wood smoke in the air in my neck of the woods, but I am blaming it on a household across the road. I was walking past their house one morning recently when smoke was literally pouring out of their chimney and blanketing the street.

I suspect they need a chimney sweep and better manners.

I cannot imagine living in an era where everyone had billowing chimneys and there was no such thing as an asthma puffer.

It must have been awful for anyone with breathing issues.

As for the poor little kiddies who were sold into service as chimney sweeps …

Yet another reminder that my life problems are pretty minor.

Speaking of which, yesterday was relatively quiet for me, other than completely screwing up my dinner order. The poorly eldest fancied Chargrill Charlies, so I popped up to the local outlet and ordered a burger and chips for them and barbecue chicken and salad for me.

I got home and realised that I’d forgotten to specify that I wanted leg and thigh, not breast and wing.

Breast and wing fans are weirdos, there is no joy in that dry, stringy meat.

So I was very sad face about my meal. Mind you, I’d made myself leftover roast vegetable risotto with goat’s cheese for lunch, so it wasn’t all hard yards on the tastebud front.

OK, gotta go. I have an early start at work so I can get to parent teacher interviews tonight.
