Celebrating independence

It gets a little messy with the timezones, but Americans celebrated Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July, yesterday.

The holiday commemorates America declaring independence from Great Britain with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It’s a huge celebration with fireworks, parades, barbecues  …

In Australia on July 4, the Independent Brewers Association celebrated Australian Independent Brewers Day. That milestone would have passed me by, except that I’m the social media manager for the drinks association these days.

In HouseGoesHome land, it was a time to ponder my own independence, which is an imperfect one. Three years after separating from my husband, I’m still married to him and there are so many pieces of our lives we haven’t untangled. From big stuff to little things such as him still being the account holder for my mobile phone (I pay my own bills, but he has to sort out the problems, which gets hairy when he accidentally puts me on $70 a month 24GB plans instead of $40 a month 12GB plans) … yeah, I know, gotta sort that out …

But I own (a chunk of) my own home and my car and I keep my life fairly well afloat (other than going off the rails on the credit cards recently).

I’m a bit of a lone wolf in many ways – I like autonomy. But I’m learning to appreciate the joy of not trying to make every single decision for every single person in my sphere … though I still have a tendency to believe I always know the best way/choice/route/decision.

Not the most attractive of my characteristics.

Better to amp up the whole ginger, smart, funny, handy in the kitchen thing.

Anyways … Here are some snaps of the celebs celebrating Independence Day:
