The Super Bowl isn’t normally Housegoeshome fare – actually, I didn’t think it was Aussie fare, so I was surprised to see how much traction it gained this year – but my attention was piqued yesterday when I wrote a story about how AB InBev’s Budweiser Super Bowl ad has caused a furor in the US, with Trump supporters calling for a boycott of the brand.
The ad tells the story of its founder Adolphus Busch’s journey from Germany to America to fulfil his dream of brewing beer. One of the dramatic moments from the ad sees Busch being abused in the street, told to “go home” because he’s “not wanted here.”
It has been accused of being too political, coming so soon after President Trump signed his executive order banning travellers and refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries.
A #BoycottBudweiser hashtag has started trending on Twitter (FFS).
Among the outraged tweets:

AB InBev has responded saying the ad was in the works for months before the executive order was announced. That ain’t cuttin’ the mustard with the Trump gang.

Meanwhile, Mamamia found a body image angle on the game – stirring controversy over Lady Gaga’s “confronting stomach” during her half-time performance. Sigh.
But I suppose that’s better than the loopy conspiracy theorists, who are feeling disturbingly empowered by Trump and running the line that Gaga is secretly a “Goddess of Satan”. Puh-lease.
