Too hard basket

I slept very badly last night after checking the mailbox on my late-night dog walk and discovering a letter from the Sheriff’s Office.

I have been summoned to a 16-week trial.

Far out!

They will need to excuse me because I have travel and a medical thing booked, but it freaked me out.

This jury duty stint will go away, but another 16-week one could take its place.

The panic kept me awake for hours.

Four months is a very long time to trudge to court every day. No WFH days there.

And who will do my job while I’m gone? My co-workers are already stretched thin. The weekly newsletter is transitioning to a new platform and I’ve just started editing the annual report.

Speaking of which … before I opened the letter, today’s blog post was about feeling old and cranky.

Some young people were standing behind me in the bus queue last night, enthusiastically debating their favourite season.

Seriously.

Their favourite season.

Someone was campaigning for summer, someone else said it was too hot … and on it went.

I know it’s sweet that they were actually talking to each other in real life about something so innocent …

But my eyeballs rattled so hard.

Shame on me. But the annual report is partly to blame.

It always puts me in a bad mood.

I enjoy the fun stuff like choosing the cover, not the nitty gritty things like making sure everything has been written in the right tense etc.

I may have worked as a sub editor at various stages of my career, but it does not bring me joy.

Big picture is my happy place. I am an ideas person. Details are annoying. I have never filed anything in my life. Ever. Neither hard nor digital copies.

This has come back to bite me after realising that I have been receiving dividends for IAG shares for eons. That’s all I know – they arrive in my back account occasionally. Very, very small dividends, so it must be like 10 shares or something.

I would not have voluntarily acquired them because I am not a share market person. Too much hassle.

I thought I’d better get to the bottom of it, so I emailed IAG asking for guidance.

The email they sent back was absolutely terrifying.

This is what the email said (reinforcing my view that shares are too much hassle) and I have no idea how to answer any of the questions. Eeeek…
