I made another dash up the freeway yesterday to visit my dad in hospital and take my mum out for Mother’s Day.
That’s four weekend daytrips to Newcastle in a row. I’m a bit knackered.
The weekend kicked off with my regular Saturday morning “saving lives” walk with friends, followed by a hunt for some sneaker socks that don’t slip down for my mum (her requested Mother’s Day gift).
The search proved to be a little more involved than I anticipated. When I finally arrived home for a shower, Google sent me a message to say that I needed to leave NOW or I’d be late for my hair appointment in Avalon, as traffic was very congested.
I wasn’t ready to leave NOW, so a few frantic minutes ensued before I threw the dogs in the car, raced to DD’s place, threw the dogs at him, raced to the hairdresser and got there 15 minutes late.
Google was a bit stalker creepy but correct. Traffic was VERY congested.
The moment my colour was done I bolted to Newport Oval to see my nephew compete in a firsts game of rugby.

DD decided to bring the dogs and join us. They found it very confronting that my sister and I were screaming from the sidelines. My very talented nephew scored two tries and we went WILD.
Afterwards, we dropped the dogs home and headed down to our favourite Italian joint for my regular order of bruschetta and an entree serve of fettucine boscaiola with chilli. Nom, nom.
Then I was up on Sunday morning pre-7am to walk the dogs and grab a coffee before beginning my Newie trek. I met my sister at St Ives at 8.20am and she drove the rest of the way. Our first stop was the hospital, then we lunched at the Lambton Park Hotel, where I had a delicious homemade pepper steak pie with truffle mash and gravy. Perfect comfort food.

Afterwards, we grabbed my sister’s dog from her friend’s place where he’d been minded for a week to prevent him licking the medication from his doggie sibling’s infected ears. Gross.
And then it was back down the freeway in the torrential rain to Sydney. Another quick turnaround followed, with DD dropping off my dogs and taking me to a comedy show.

We enjoyed a quick, succulent Chinese meal, then watched comedian Bron Lewis’ brutally funny riffs on the horrors of being a high school teacher.
I got some big laughs out of it, then DD dropped me home at 9.30pm and I walked the dogs around the block for their final wee of the day.
So you may understand why I am feeling a bit bleary. No rest for the wicked.
Fortunately the drinks world is pretty quiet on the event front at the moment, so my week ahead will generally be spent at home after work.
But I am not looking forward to getting out of bed this morning and trekking to the office.
How about you – how was your weekend?
