That was unexpected

Yesterday was a quirky one, filled with unexpected monents.

I spotted myself in a photo on the Boom Crash Opera Facebook page …

Can you Where’s Wally me?

I got a random message on a very old blog post called “Friends with Benefits”, informing me that my song of the day – Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” – which I described as “cute” was actually about a mentally ill school shooter.

I frantically Googled it and Wikipedia informed me: “The song was written and recorded by frontman Mark Foster while he was working as a commercial jingle writer. Contrasting with the upbeat musical composition, the lyrics describe the homicidal thoughts of a troubled youth named Robert.”

Eeek, “cute” comment has been deleted.

I organised a photo opportunity for the Minister for Tourism in Port Stephens that also featured my ex sister-in-law, while the photographer turned out to be a former sports reporter I worked with at the Newcastle Herald in the … wince … 1990s.

Such. A. Small. World.

After work I met my friend Sue at a bar called Double Deuce in Sydney CBD. It felt gloriously like we’d been transported to a 70s dive bar, complete with purple cocktails, Jatz with french onion dip and a Patrick Swayze shrine.

This is our awesome bartender modelling the Purple People Eater …

As we were paying the bill, the bartender suggested we head up the road to a bar called Disco Pantera and visit his Scottish bartender mates there.

We didn’t take much convincing.

We settled into stools by the window, drank a glass of expensive Chablis and ate a plate of potato gems while complaining about our middle-aged middles.

Then I caught the bus home, took the dogs out for a wee and got randomly rained on.

And now I’ve woken up to another busy day, but I’m on the home stretch to the long weekend.

Take care. Lest we forget.

Song of the day: The Black Keys “Lonely Boy” (a fabulous cover of the song was playing in the Disco Pantera bathroom)
