Spice bags & freezer burn

My phone froze yesterday … and it wasn’t a software glitch.

I accidentally put it in the freezer. Call the aged care assessment team, stat!

I realised the phone was missing when I needed to respond to a push notification to access a virtual meeting.

I went on a frantic search and couldn’t find it anywhere. I even bolted downstairs to check if it was in the car.

In increasing desperation I retraced my steps to the kitchen … which I may have visited to get a tub of Häagen-Dazs salted caramel ice cream … despite my vows to go on a diet …

And that’s where I finally found my phone, nestled on an ice brick.

It was so frozen that Face ID wasn’t working, so I still couldn’t get the damn push notification to access my video call.

Cue a frantic attempts to thaw the phone in my armpit …

In other breaking-the-diet news, DD called out of the blue and asked if I wanted to have dinner with him.

Not just any old dinner, an Irish spice bag dinner.

He’s been obsessed with trying one since seeing it on Tik Tok.

An Irish spice bag consists of crispy fries, with spicy fried chicken bits and some fried onions and capsicum thrown in, with a side of Irish curry sauce. It’s commonly sold in Chinese takeaways in Ireland and has recently taken off in Sydney.

The place DD saw on Tik Tok was called Paddy Chans, which is an Irish Chinese takeaway restaurant in Kensington.

Its Spice Box (above) features chicken balls and spring rolls and other heart attacks on a plate.

We vaguely contemplated lining up to get takeaway and eat by the beach, but decided to go to the Taphouse Hotel instead for a dine-in experience.

The Taphouse is a beautiful old pub on Flinders Street that specialises in Irish-Chinese fusion cuisine. We climbed the many flights of stairs to its rooftop beer garden and ordered the spice bag with a side of fried rice and some pork dumplings.

Very evil but quite tasty! Though it felt like I was gestating a food baby afterwards.

DD wasn’t quite ready to go home, so we headed to North Bondi to watch the sun set and the hover surfboards zoom.

And unplanned night of fun and mild heartburn was had by all.

Have a great weekend!
