Oooh, I forgot to tell you how excited I was last week by a celebrity encounter.
When I was staying at DD’s I went for a swim one afternoon and Felix Williamson was there having a dip!
You might be thinking Felix who?
Felix is an actor and the son Australian playwright David Williamson. But the reason I got excited was that he created a YouTube series in 2015 with his neighbour, filmmaker Bruce Walters, called Avalon Now.
And I was seeing him in his natural habitat!
I loved Avalon Now. It lampooned Northern Beaches culture and it was hilarious.
The PR blurb for the show described it thus: “At the heart of Sydney’s idyllic Northern Beaches lies the sunny suburb of Avalon, where attractive, socially-progressive families cruise through life in four-wheel drives. But beneath the sunny veneer the suburb is gripped by crisis, mostly of the mid-life variety. Prosecco or Champagne? How does this Tinder thing work? And what if the year’s biggest social event – The White Party – is a flop? Sit back, grab a cronut and a kale shake and indulge.”
And indulge I did!
This was my favourite episode …
The reasons why I loved the episode is that was hilarious … and also because the character played by the divine Richard Roxburgh is based on someone I know!
I didn’t realise any of this until I was grabbing a six-pack of cider from DD’s local bottlo one day and a French bloke served me.
He said hello in a way that indicated we knew each other.
I stared at him blankly for a moment before realising it was a school dad. Not just any school dad, but the father of one of the eldest’s best friends.
So we were both a loooooooong way from home. You know how it kind of throws you when you see someone out of context. I was totally thrown for a second.
But I recovered quickly and we chatted about hoe he’d been working there for eight years.
The Avalon Now episode above featured a crazy French bottle shop employee …
And I wondered …
And I was right! The school dad’s wife confirmed the following day that the character was based on him, but assured me he hadn’t accidentally killed anyone on the Spanish border.
Phew!
Anyways … when I excitedly nudged the kids and told them the bloke walking past us on the beach was Felix Williamson, they didn’t give two hoots, even when I extensively explained who he was and how funny Avalon Now was.
Ah well, I got a kick out of it.
And I’d better get cracking on the day because in today’s episode of HouseGoesHome Now the dogs are scratching on the laundry door and I have a project launch at work to attend.
I barely slept last night due to nerves.
Wish me luck!
Good luck with the project. I LOVE Avalon Now. A friend of mine worked in that bottle shop for a while and loved the version of his friend who appeared in that episode. And your kids mightn’t think it cool that you spotted Felix Williamson in the wild, but I do.
So glad to hear you are also an Avalon Now fan!!!
