Do you actually do any work?

I work from home on Fridays. It comes in handy when an exciting booze story breaks overnight – I can jump out of bed and start typing, without having to worry about showering, cleaning my teeth, getting dressed and scooting up to the office by 9am.

That’s what happened last Friday when Lion announced it had bought a 50% share in Four Pillars Gin.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT!

A bloke rang me with an advertising query a few hours later and asked if I was working from home.

Then he cheerfully added: “Do you actually do any work on Fridays?”

You know how I mentioned that I was managing to control my perimenopausal rage? Well, that comment almost tipped me over the edge. Everything went black for a moment.

I wanted to shout: FFS! YES I FARKING DO WORK WHEN I’M WORKING FROM HOME!

But I showed mercy and didn’t reach down the phone line to karate chop his windpipe.

I calmly told him that I’d been working since 7am. It has been a busy few weeks as we prepare to launch the new Drinks Trade website. There have been a few hitches that have required me to input every story I write into two different places – the old site and the new site – with two different picture sizes.

It slows you down a bit.

I actually get more done when I’m working from home. Aside from being able to start early, there’s no chitter chat in the staff kitchen or over the partitions. I just put my head down and get on with it.

And in my lunch break I can go for a walk with a friend or go to the doctor or put a load of washing on.

I have no idea why I even need to justify this … but digital doesn’t clock on at 9am and off at 5pm. If I to miss a story about a winemaker finding a koala on the backseat of his car and it pops up in my Facebook feed at 8pm at night, I jump on line and post something.

(Not breaking news, but … Straya …)

Do I actually do any work from home? Yes I freaking do. Far too much … because I’m obsessed with clicks and UAs and reach and engagement.

I’ll probably need to join Google Analytics Anonymous one day.

And possibly Middle Aged Rage Anonymous because I still want to punch the ad bloke for saying that.
