Thank you Dr Pinky

love

There’s a fabulous blogger called Pinky Poinker who you really must follow. She regales you with stories about her primary school students, who can do amazing things like stuff their lobes inside their ear canals, and about plants sending her messages in bars.

A Pinky blog never fails to raise my spirits.

Yesterday she wrote one called On My Deathbed that pondered what life’s really about for her and then asked “What matters to YOU in life?”

It was a bit spooky, though not quite as spooky as plants sending her messages in bars, because a few hours earlier I’d wailed on my blog: “I don’t know what I want!”

But as soon as I saw Pinky’s question, the answer was obvious. I wrote in the comment section of her blog: “Love pretty much sums it up for me.”

Not hearts and flowers love, though that would be awesome. And I hope it crosses my path again one day, because it’s a dazzling thing.

When the notion of romantic love floats into the air, I always imagine the scene from Moulin Rouge when that luscious Ewan McGregor warbles:

Christian: Love is a many splendored thing,
Love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love.
Satine: Please, don’t start that again.

C: All you need is love.
S: A girl has got to eat.

C: All you need is love.
S: Or she’ll end up on the streets.

C: All you need is love.
S: Love is just a game.

C: I was made for loving you baby, you were made for loving me.
S: The only way of loving me baby, is to pay a lovely fee.

C: Just one night, give me just one night.
S: There’s no way, ’cause you can’t pay.

C: In the name of love, one night in the name of love.
S: You crazy fool, I won’t give in to you.

C: Don’t leave me this way,
I can’t survive without your sweet love, oh baby
Don’t leave me this way.
S: You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs.

C: I look around me and I see, it isn’t so, oh no.
S: Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs.

C: Well what’s wrong with that? I’d like to know.
‘Cause here I go again!
Love lifts us up where we belong,
Where eagles fly, on a mountain high.
S: Love makes us act like we are fools,
Throw our lives away, for one happy day.

C: We could be heroes! Just for one day.
S: You, you will be mean.

C: No I won’t!
S: And I, I’ll drink all the time.

C: We should be lovers.
S: We can’t do that.

C: We should be lovers, and that’s a fact.
S: Though nothing, will keep us together.

C: We could steal time…
Both: Just for one day. We could be heroes, forever and ever.
We could be heroes, forever and ever. We could be heroes…
C: Just because I will always love you.

S: I …
Both: Can’t help loving you
S: How Wonderful life is
Both: Now you are in the world

Sorry, I got distracted. How could you not when you have Ewan on the brain?

The love I’m talking about encompasses all it’s Googly forms …

  1. I’m with you, Alana. Love is the thing. It’s what we’re here for and it’s the only thing that will matter when we’re gone. I doubt shopping in Hawaii will rate a deathbed ponder. Lovely blog, and thanks for the reminder of that magical scene. I unashamedly love Baz and that’s one of my favourite movies ever:-)

  2. What a lovely post to wake up to this morning Alana 🙂 The Triffids are the perfect song choice by the way. That’s what we called our talking plant. We plan to go back to the bar with the horse racing form guide to see if little Triffid can give us some hot tips. My favourite Ewan movie is Big Fish which is a love story if there ever was one. Thank you for making my day xx
