Hugh’s $1.85million birthday party
Hugh Jackman turned 45 on Saturday and threw himself a party with 4500 guests to celebrate.
There was one catch – they all had to pay to attend because it was a benefit concert that raised $1.85 million for the Motion Picture & Television Fund (which provides health care and other services to entertainment-industry workers and retirees).
“This is probably the most narcissistic way to spend your birthday,” he said after the show. “I chose my favorite songs and told stories about my life.”
Hugh performed songs from his recent Broadway show, told personal stories, shared images of Australia and danced to numbers from classic Hollywood musicals — including a tap-dancing routine from “Singin’ in the Rain.”
“A lot of guys would say to their wife, ‘Do you mind if I go play golf with my buddies?’ That’s how I am about the show,” he said. “I love it. If there’s a song I don’t like, I cut it and bring in a new song. Everything is something I want to do. So to be here tonight, supporting this cause — and it couldn’t have been a more generous crowd if it tried — in every way it was great.”
Cybill Shepherd, Bryan Singer, Darren Criss and songwriter Carole Bayer Sager were among the famous faces who attended the two-and-a-half-hour show and joined in an audience rendition of “Happy birthday to you!” for the star. The night ended with Hugh auctioning off an electric Fiat, a pair of Wolverine claws and two sweaty undershirts he wore during his performance. The shirts went for $11,000 each.
Prior to the performance he Instagrammed the below shot with the caption: “Now this is the way to start off a birthday! Thanks to all my fellow Aussies. You know who are!”
After the performance Hugh hopped on a plane to Beijing at midnight.
Michael admits he lied about his cancer
In an interview with Samuel L. Jackson on British talk show “This Morning” Michael Douglas has admitted that the type of cancer he battled in 2010 was not stage four throat cancer — he was actually diagnosed with tongue cancer. But he lied to protect his career.
“This was right before I had to go on a big tour for Wall Street so we kind of said, ‘There’s no way we can cancel the tour and say we don’t feel well,'” he explained. “So you know, I said, ‘You’ve just got to come out and just tell them I’ve got cancer and that’s that.'”
Michael decided to keep his tongue cancer a secret after his doctor, who’d found a walnut-size tumor at the base of his tongue, revealed the surgery could seriously impact his appearance.
“The surgeon said, ‘Let’s just say it’s throat cancer,'” Michael said, explaining that the doctor told him “it’s not going to be pretty” and that he faced losing part of his jaw and tongue.
Michael subsequently underwent aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatment and was declared tumor-free in January 2011.
James: Dawson would bore me senseless
James Van Der Beek is preparing to star in the new TV comedy Friends With Better Lives (from Friends’ producer Dana Klein) and reflecting on the character that made him famous: Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek.
And he’s told Paper Magazine Dawson would drive him nuts.
“Dawson was sweet, but would probably get on my nerves and end up as one of those people I found myself making excuses to not hang out with,” he revealed.
His co-star Michelle Williams has been reminiscing too, in a more positive way. She recently took her daughter, Matlida Ledger, to visit the show’s North Carolina set.
“I actually hadn’t been back since the show ended but I went back and took my daughter on vacation and saw people I hadn’t seen in 10 years and went all the places that we used to go,” she revealed in an interview with The New Yorker’s David Denby. “And it was great. It was actually a real stroke of luck to be transported there.”
Christian’s scary yo-yo diet
Christian Bale has revealed a sizeable paunch in his publicity stills for the new David O. Russell film American Hustle.
But he bristles at the suggestion that, after previously losing weight for roles in the movies The Machinist (shown above) and Rescue Dawn that his shape-shifting is a gimmick.
“I find it laughable that it’s considered to be some f****** gimmick – it’s so patronizing. For God’s sake, do people not understand what a pain it is to do? It’s as though it’s some comment about, ‘Oh it’s easy for him, because he’s done it a bunch of times’. It’s not easy, it’s not fun – it’s horrible.”
It could also be damaging his health, if Tom Hanks revelation last week that a career spent gaining and losing weight might be to blame for his diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Benedict fights back
Julian Assange wrote to Benedict Cumberbatch when he heard the actor was set to portray him in the movie The Fifth Estate and begged him not to, saying: “I believe that you should reconsider your involvement in this enterprise,” Assange wrote, before then adding that he wouldn’t meet with Cumberbatch, a request the 37-year-old actor made before the film’s production began. By meeting with you, I would validate this wretched film, and endorse the talented, but debauched, performance that the script will force you to give.”
Here’s what Benedict had to say about Julian Assange’s plea during a Reddit AMA (short for “Ask Me Anything”) to promote the movie.
“To have the man you are about to portray ask you intelligently and politely not to do it gave me real cause for concern, however, it galvanized me into addressing why I was doing this movie. He accuses me of being a “hired gun” as if I am an easily bought cypher for right wing propaganda. Not only do I NOT operate in a moral vacuum but this was not a pay day for me at all. I’ve worked far less hard for more financial reward. This project was important to me because of the integrity I wanted to bring to provocative difficult but ultimately timely and a truly important figure of our modern times. The idea of making a movie about someone who so far removed from my likeness or situation who brought about an ideal through personal sacrifice that has changed the way we view both social media, the power of the individual to have a voice in that space, and be able to question both the hypocrisies and wrongdoings of organizations and bodies of powerful people that rule our lives… This resonated deeply with my beliefs in civil liberty, a healthy democracy, and the human rights of both communities and individuals to question those in authority. I believe that the film, quite clearly, illuminates the great successes of wikileaks and its extraordinary founder Julian Assange. As well as, examining the personalities involved and what become a dysfunctional relationship within that organization. While the legacy of his actions and the organizations continue to evolve and only history will be the true judge of where this is leading us. The Fifth Estate is a powerful, if dramatized, entry point for a discussion about this extraordinary lurch forward in our society. I wanted to create a three dimensional portrait of a man far more maligned in the tabloid press than he is in our film to remind people that he is not just the weird, white haired Australian dude wanted in Sweden, hiding in an embassy behind Harrods. But a true force to be reckoned with, achieved the realization of the great ideal. I’m proud to be involved in tackling such a contentious character and script. There is only personal truth in my opinion, and the film should provoke debate and not consensus. It should be enjoyable and ultimately empowering to realize that Julian has spearheaded a movement that is the foundations stone of The Fifth Estate, people journalism and what that is capable of including finding out the “truth” for yourself.”
Charlie pulls out
Charlie Hunnam has made a shock exit from his role as Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey.
“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” Universal Pictures and Focus Features said in a joint statement.
The announcement will be music to the ears of the thousands of fans of the book who signed a petition demanding that his role as Christian Grey be re-cast with Matt Bomer and that his chosen leading lady, Dakota Johnson, be replaced with Alexis Bledel.
Who do you think should replace him?
Meg returns to the box
Following in the footsteps of A-listers including Robin Williams, Meg Ryan is set to star and executive-produce a TV pilot, playing “a sunny, devoted and desperately non-confrontational” single mother who decides to return to work at her former publishing house, where she will be supervised by her 30-year-old former intern.
The actress has been keeping a low profile in New York in recent years with her 8-year-old daughter, Daisy, and singer boyfriend John Mellencamp.
Meg got her first big break in TV as Betsy Stewart Andropoulos on As the World Turns, which she starred in from 1982-1984. Betsy’s touching 1984 wedding to Steve Andropoulos (Frank Runyeon, pictured) reaped the second-highest ratings in soap history.
Keith’s little chip off the old block
Keith Urban has revealed that his oldest daughter, Sunday Rose, 5, may be following in his musical footsteps.
“Sometimes I’ll just hear Sunny singing ‘Kiss a Girl,'” he says of his 2009 hit. “It’s just infectiously catchy pop and I have a side of me that loves that stuff.
“She sings ‘I Love It’ by Icona Pop all the time. She [and 2½-year-old sister Faith] sit in back of the car and sing, ‘I don’t care, I love it, I love it.’ We’ve had to figure out the clean version of the song.”
He also confesses: “They’ll just mishear the lyrics. Sunny used to sing [Foster the People’s] ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ and she thought the lyric ‘faster than my bullet’ was ‘faster than my brother’ and so that’s what she sang. It’s adorable.”
Robbie’s fatherhood fears
Robbie Williams has fought back tears while discussing fatherhood in a radio interview for BBC Radio 4.
When asked about his one-year-old daughter Teddy, he admitted: “She’s difficult to talk about.”
“I worry about me, I’ve been a very selfish for a long time. I’ve indulged myself in every way possible and since I was 16, everyone has done everything for me, I didn’t have to lift a finger really.
“And then all of a sudden person comes into the world that I have to look after and be responsible for. I was terrified all the way through the pregnancy that I wasn’t going to be able to step up and be a father, the father that I want to be to her.
“And I sort of made this promise to her during that time of not being certain and it’s something that I dangled there as a carrot to myself that it’s the most important job I will do on the planet.”
He said his new album Swings Both Ways was inspired by Teddy: “Everything I do, is for her. Every time I open my mouth now in the studio it’s a song about her. It would bore people to death but I could do a trilogy of albums about her. There is a reason for me to everything now. I wasn’t to going to have a kid and I wasn’t going to get married. Then I met someone who was amazing and I fell in love with her completely and I changed all my thoughts and feelings about that. It’s a miracle that it has happened because I now get to experience the full gamut of being human, and she’s a sensational kid.”

X-FIles reunion confirmed
Twenty years after the hit series The X-Files aired, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have taken part in a reddit “ask me anything” chat and confirmed they are keen to collaborate again.
David said: “I think Chris [Carter, The X-Files creator] is working on a script. Chris is shooting a pilot right now, so he might not be working on a script, but he claims to be working on a script, and if he does do that and Fox wants to make it … Gillian will do it, I will do it, so start your writing campaign now.
