Totally camp

school-camps

So, the nine-year-old went to school band camp last week. She wasn’t terribly keen on the 10 hours of music tuition in two days part, but reckons the food was awesome. Mainly because it involved lots of the two most popular child food groups: pizza and sugar.

Since her school obviously thinks I’m made of money, she’s off to camp again this week. Oh yes, she is. Ah, the Witchery sale shopping I could have done with that cash …

It’s regular year 4 camp this time. No music tuition, just fun.

She’s very excited about that. But nervous about the food. We packed her off to a camp up north over the Christmas holidays and she hasn’t stopped moaning about how bad the food was since. The chips were cold apparently. Just not good enough.

The school has sent home a packing checklist.

It looks more like a lost-property-at-the-end-of-camp checklist to me.

It includes:

* shorts and t-shirts

* jeans

* jumpers and tracksuit pants

* raincoat

* pyjamas

* swimming costume and rash shirt [in winter!]

* sunscreen, sun hat and sunglasses

* toiletries including soap, toothbrush and toothpaste

* two towels

* pillow, pillowcase and sleeping bag

* day pack

* insect repellent

* lip balm

* two pairs of sneakers

* plastic bags for dirty or wet clothes

* handkerchief or tissues

* water bottle

* torch and spare batteries

Phew. Pretty extensive for a three-day trip, don’t you reckon?

There are also some items on the list that I’m figuring are optional. Does your kid have sunglasses, for example? Mine doesn’t. And I’d hazard to guess she’ll survive perfectly well without them in the wilds. In  June.

Oh, and here’s the hilarious next stipulation: “All baggage needs to be of a size that will allow your child to independently carry or pull it along.”

Right, so you’ve just asked me to pack everything bar the kitchen sink and you want it in a bag the child can independently carry.

Bwahahahahahha. Very funny. I’ll start injecting her with anabolic steroids now, shall I?

But seriously, I don’t even think the largest of our suitcases is going to accommodate it all.

I’d better do some practice stuffing sessions this weekend in preparation.

Has your child every been to camp? Did they enjoy it?
