HouseHunting: Merewether or bust

I think I’ve found my Newcastle dream house … well, almost.

Can a dream house really be on a busy road? Novocastrians, tell me, do you reckon Scenic Drive would be noisy?

But just look at this place – the view is AWESOME. And I love all the ‘5os features – the arch in the hallway makes me giddy.

What the agent says: “The uninterrupted coastal and city view from this craftsmen built 1950’s Art Deco period residence says ‘look at me!’ Every room in this 2-storey home shows off the best of Newcastle, and to the north watching the waves break on the golden sands of the Merewether-Bar Beach coastline is truly captivating.

‘This much loved residence has been well kept, showcasing the charm and character with the large main bedroom boasting a crystal chandelier, original built-in wardrobes and dressing table. Fittings in the large bathroom are original and in excellent condition, and features separate toilet with new fittings, plus downstairs toilet and shower. The 2nd twin bedroom has built-ins, and the 3rd bedroom/study opens to a large balcony through French Doors.

“Downstairs features an updated kitchen, formal dining room with built-in glass cabinet and buffet, and formal lounge room with brand new split-system air-conditioning, and sandstone fireplace with electric heater.”

When I type in price guides it’s suggesting I could get it for $900,000. Husband reckons I’m dreaming. I love dreaming, dreaming is fun. I wonder if I could get a bank to share my dream and loan me $900,000. I’m good for it, I promise …

  1. How fabulous! I don’t think Skyline’s that noisy at night – it’s not a major nighttime thoroughfare – peak hour’s a killer though. But how FABULOUS is it? Worth putting up with a couple of things for that. GO ON!

  2. Go for it! You get used to traffic noise. I’ve lived in Rembrandt Dr, Merewether Hts twice and the first night we thought we’d made a huge mistake buying the place because of the noise from City Rd. (House overlooked the cutting in City Rd so was open to traffic noise.) However, after a week of restless nights, we were used to it.
PS If the Scenic Drive house goes for only $900K, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle – or aunt)

  3. No room for the chookns either… & remember, merewether ppl wldnt like any kinda random chook noise… lol

    1. Good point, Megan. And as for rooster noise, well they’d be onto the council so fast…Plus, if the chooks escaped and made it onto the road – well, Schnitzel would really live up to his name.
