Tickled pink

Last night I was lucky enough to score an invite to Girls Night In. In case you haven’t heard, it’s an annual event to raise money for the Cancer Council: “Girls’ Night In is a fantastic chance to catch up with the girls, have fun and raise funds for all women’s cancers. Getting involved is easy. Simply invite the girls over for a fun night in and ask them to donate what they usually spend on a night out.”

I’ve always thought it meant hiring a couple of DVDs and scoffing some popcorn, but a pair of school mums with a background in event organising – who’ve christened themselves the Two Pink Ladies – have turned it into the girly social event of the year. This was their seventh annual bash.

As it was the first time I’ve attended, I wasn’t quite up to speed on how fabulous it would be. I wore my Kmart jeans and a pink T-shirt, only to realise everyone else was arriving in their finest. Pink feather boas were handed out at the door, beauty stations were positioned around the room offering make-up touch ups and blow-dries, a masseuse was at work in a bedroom, a table filled with sweet treats was a centrepiece of the room, caterers circulated with fancy nibbles …

I hooved down a few glasses of pink champagne and started talking about myself too much, as usual.

Later in the night we were given pink helium balloons to release into the sky with messages to lost loved ones. It felt quite magical to watch them spiral upwards into the darkness.

And we each scored pink goodie bags as we left, filled with chocolates, mini photo frames and a candles.

It was really quite something. Congratulations Two Pink Ladies, I’m awed.
