Heading underground

I reached my nightclubbing peak in the ’80s, dancing to New Order and Soft Cell at Newcastle bars with curious names like Fanny’s, Gunfighter’s Rest and the Crazy Horse.

But I’ve also grown to love the ’70s and its funky music as time has gone on. And I’m enjoying ‘70s inspired bars currently being the hottest trend in town.

I took my friend Ania to the launch of Kings Cross underground bar Jude’s last night, where retro-inspired cocktails prepared by a Michelin-star bartender are matched with classic songs and delicious morsels including truffle fries.

The night didn’t get off to the best start. As I was crossing George Street on route to Martin Place Station, a woman tapped me on the shoulder to let me know my dress was tucked into my undies.

Again!!!

I effing hate dresses.

Anyways …

I met Ania on the train platform and we made our way to Bayswater Road.

Descending the stairs into Jude’s, past its curved mirrored wall, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve gone back in time to New York’s famed Studio 54.

Inside, floor-length suede curtains frame the intimate space, which is filled with velvet lounge chairs and an illuminated art deco mirror that reflects a disco ball spinning from the ceiling.

We kicked off with the venue’s signature Hey Jude cocktail, a lovechild of the lychee martini and spicy margarita. It was delicious, crafted with Belvedere vodka, lychee, lemon and chilli.

We also loved the theatrical Smokin’ Paps – smoked wood chips are ignited on a wooden board beneath a Nick and Nora glass, which is inverted to capture the smoke before being filled with Jack Daniel’s Honey, Sazerac Rye and orange bitters.

We snacked on the aforementioned truffle fries, baked camembert with sourdough and hot honey and a cheese plate.

Bulk fun was had, including a lovely chat with my friend Shae from Wine Glass Media, who organised the event.

I was meant to be backing up for another bar opening tonight, but it was mysteriously cancelled late yesterday.

I was disappointed when they emailed the news, as I was looking forward to catching up with my plus one. But my 58-year-old body is secretly thankful – it’s been a busy week and it needs a rest.

Song of the day: The Beatles “Hey Jude”
