Serotonin hits

I started Googling “middle-aged rage” last night after I took back two shopping trolleys that have been abandoned outside the apartment block.

Because I was filled with it.

And I wanted to know if the swearing and ranting to myself that I do these days is abnormal.

According to Healthline my middle-aged rage is caused by my ovaries slowing their production of estrogen. Among other things, estrogen controls how much serotonin your brain produces. Serotonin is a brain chemical that helps regulate your moods.

When your serotonin levels drop you can become irritable, hostile, anxious and suffer from disturbed sleep.

Yes to all of the above …. hopefully my brain miraculously produces some extra reserves before I run into my neighbour who scatters vapes, e-bikes and trolleys on the path like confetti. Entitled dickhead.

Ooooh I was mad.

I did some rage cleaning of the apartment and it’s looking very schmick.

Then I got absolutely drenched taking the dogs for a walk.

Apparently it’s already Sydney’s wettest August in 27 years and there are still many days of rain ahead.

The ABC has analyzed the complete weather history at Observatory Hill dating back to 1858, which reveals rainfall during the past six years has been the most on record.

Middle-aged Alana remembers when there was no rain at all and the city’s dam levels were perilously low.

In 2003, Sydney implemented water restrictions in response to the drought, one of the worst in 100 years.

That meant limited watering of lawns and gardens, no car-washing and having to ask for permission to fill new or renovated swimming pools.

Warragamba Dam, Sydney’s main water source, hit a record low of 32.5% of its capacity on February 8, 2007 according to Wikipedia.

I remember being shocked and awed when we moved briefly to New York and saw fire hydrants being turned on in the streets, cascading water into the air for kids to play in.

Now Sydney’s dams are overflowing. And there are fears that flooding rains are our new normal due to climate change.

OK time to crack out the umbrella and walk the dogs. I might not get a chance to blog tmw – big plans tonight. Huge. Stay tuned.

Song of the day: Alanis Morissette “You oughta know” (I sang this one a lot 11 years ago – there was a lot of rage then too)
