Good Karma

When I got married almost 25 year ago there were two extravagances: a Collette Dinnigan wedding dress and my favourite band serenading me down the aisle, Karma County.

The band had a song called Olana. Soooooo beautiful. And close enough to my name to make it the perfect serenade as I walked down the aisle.

That was then …

This was Friday night …  A Karma County Acoustic Xmas …

I took DD to see the band get back together on Friday night, during an intimate gig at a venue called Church Street Studios in Camperdown.

When they walked on stage I texted my ex a pic and said “we all got old!”

He replied “Hope it’s a fun show – they never got the success they deserved.”

They sure didn’t.

The gig was wonderful and Brendan still sings like an angel. He even threw in covers of “Milky Way” by The Church and “Blue Christmas” by Elvis.

But the songs that made me teary were the Karma County classics “Postcard” and “Lifesaver’s Love Song”.

The band performed “Lifesaver’s Love Song” at my wedding, but that’s not why I cried. It’s simply a beautiful song, with the most lovely lyrics.

I was being swept away
I was hoping to be saved
You’d come crashing
Through the waves
Singing many are the ways
That I love you

I felt like giving in
I was dragged down by
What might have been
Then you gently pull me in
Singing many are the ways
That I love you

Hold me close now
Don’t let go

I dreamt I was brave,
It was you I had saved
And you drown me
With your praise
Singing many are the ways
That I love you

You can buy it for $1.69 here.

Lead singer Brendan also sang it at band member Stu’s wedding. I congratulated Stu on the gig as he left the stage on Friday night and he was so nice, even trying to act like he remembered performing at my wedding.

He said the band played at a lot of weddings over the years.

They deserved to play in big venues all around the world. The music business is a cruel mistress.

The other moment that got me a bit teary on Friday was finally having a splash in the ocean before the Karma County gig.

So good for my soul … unlike being on call for work on Saturday – I drew the short straw, something came up and I had to work for six hours.

Blaaaaaah. So much for Christmas shopping.

I made up for the loss on Sunday, also getting my toenails painted sparkly red, going out for suburban Chinese with DD and lazing on his couch afterwards watching music videos together.

Hope your weekend turned out well too.

PS Oh a Costa the TV gardener was at the gig – I didn’t realise he used to appear in Karma County’s video clips and act as a bit of a roadie for them. See if you can spot him in the one below …

Song of the day: Karma County “I told you so”
