What’s love got to do with it?

Did you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

I did not. Though I saw lots of blokes piling onto buses carrying long-stemmed red roses home to their beloveds.

And I am beside myself over the news that the Prime Minister proposed to his partner Jodie Haydon yesterday. They are engaged to be married, with Anthony Albanese writing “she said yes” on social media this morning!

As for us … DD spent Valentine’s night doing a Warrior workout, while I made the eldest a chicken pot pie for dinner.

How about you?

I didn’t really mind the lack of romance in my evening, since I have an unfortunate Valentine’s Day history.

As I lovingly recall each year – there have been some absolute shockers.

Like my date at a fancy French restaurant where the woman at the next table screeched with outrage every time a French delicacy was served – from oysters to coddled eggs to rare steak. She was so incensed about everything being “f@#king raw’ that I feared she might deck the chef at any moment.

So romantic.

Then there was Valentine’s Day 2014, when my husband got the keys to his bachelor pad after announcing that he was leaving me.

Break out the violins.

There was also the agonizing February 14 when I miscarried my Mirena.

Just to clear up any potential confusion, that’s not a baby name. A Mirena is a plastic anchor-shaped thingy that is commonly used for birth control – in my case it was inserted in a failed attempt to mitigate my lady plumbing problems.

There is nothing romantic about miscarrying a Mirena. It was a messy and miserable night.

Valentine’s Day … meh …

Apparently the rest of Australia feels differently. Research agency Roy Morgan predicted Australian lovebirds would spend $465 million this Valentine’s Day.

Its survey found flowers (mentioned by 48% of respondents), chocolates (33%) and dinner or a trip away (11%) were the most popular purchases.

And the average amount Aussies spent was $135.

DD and I are catching up tonight instead. We are partaking in our new favourite – and free – couples activity: luxury cruise ship information nights.

These nights are quite fun because they are usually held at fancy hotels with complimentary wine and canapes, alongside pretty videos and interesting presentations about fabulous cruises. There are usually discounts available too, though we have yet to avail ourselves of any as we are not spontaneous when it comes to spending large amounts of money.

Tonight we’re off to the Aurora Expeditions’ ‘Go Wild With Your Bucket List’ event. Aurora are most famous for their Antarctica adventures. I am not sure I am ready for all that ice and snow. I feel more inclined to snorkel and watch palm trees sway.

But it will still be interesting to see what’s on offer.
