I saw it!!

I was cooking dinner last night when I saw a notification pop up on my phone.

Someone had spotted bioluminescence at Palm Beach and said it was “worth a look”.

As regular readers will know, I am a bit obsessed with bioluminescence and have never seen it in real life.

The natural ocean wonder of bioluminescence makes the sea sparkle neon blue due to a certain type of algae emitting a glow.

If you’re lucky it looks like the main pic on this blog post. (Spoiler alert: I wasn’t that lucky.)

Normally people post amazing photos on the Bioluminescence Australia Facebook page that they took at 1am the previous night,

This was my best tip yet for seeing it at a decent hour. I agonized for a while then thought bugger it and jumped in the car.

When I got to Palm Beach there was nothing to be seen, zip, nada.

Then I checked the Facebook page again and the person who’d said it was “worth a look” was having words with other followers and insisting it was there when you walked on the shoreline.

So I edged my way down to the sand in the pitch darkness, took off my shoes and started dancing on the shore to activate the bio.

The sand beneath my feet looked like hundreds of tiny, glittering sapphires were scattered beneath me.

It was almost impossible to capture it on my phone.

So I put my camera away and just watched and enjoyed it. Emotion welled up inside me. The beauty in nature fills me with so much joy.

It was what are called “sand sparkles” rather than the dazzling bio experience that I’ve seen online.

But it was still wonderful and meant my trip wasn’t entirely in vain.

It was very late when I got home and I would argue with the person who told the 40,000 members of the Bio Facebook page that her “worth a look” comment should have said “if you live 15 minutes away”.

Apparently it got more impressive at 1am but I’m not a 1am girl.

I wasn’t a 5am girl either, which is when I was woken by someone yelling “get in the f@#king car!” … closely followed by the sound of sirens …

Never a dull moment.
