I hardly ever check my letterbox any more, do you?

Remember when it was an exciting repository for postcards from friends traveling overseas, letters from pen pals and monthly newsletters from fan clubs and badge makers (OK maybe that last one was just me).

Now there’s just the occasional bill you’ve forgotten to switch to electronic, accusations from the electoral commission that you didn’t vote (I bloody did) and the occasional advertising flyer.

But I was walking the dogs past my letterbox the other night and thought I’d better give it a clear out.

And I found a “community notification” from Transport for NSW.

There has been an “increase in scope” for road work they have been doing outside my apartment and so instead of completing it in five night shifts, they are returning for another eight night shifts from 8pm to 5am from Sunday to Friday.

They are installing pedestrian crossings and kerb ramps and new arrow lanterns.

Apparently the “work needs to be carried out at night to limit disruption to traffic and reduce safety risks” to its workers, pedestrians and motorists.

As I have extensively discussed with other angry residents on the local Facebook page I have joined, there is not a whole lot of traffic on the road between 9am and 3pm, so I fail to understand why it can’t be done then.

I feel so sorry for the people right on the intersection – their windows are less than a metre away from the action. They must be distraught from lack of sleep.

What about the safety risk of them staggering zombie-like through the community?

Apparently Transport for NSW is doing everything it can to minimise noise impacts.

I don’t think the workers who throw metal objects into the back of their trucks at 5am got the memo.

They say they are endeavouring to complete noisier tasks by midnight and are installing noise blankets during activities such as concrete saw cutting and jackhammering.

Whoever invented noise blankets might need to go back to the drawing board and give the design a bit of a tweak.

I am so dirty with Transport for NSW.

I’ve also discovered a notification on a telegraph pole that they will be removing a roundabout in the street behind me. No doubt that will need to be done between 8pm and 5am too.

Sob.

I am dreaming of moving to a nice, quiet private island somewhere far enough off the coast that the zombies can’t get me.

Does anyone know how far zombies can swim?

Sorry, what? I think I’m starting to hallucinate from lack of sleep.

That’s a lie, even when I’ve had lots of rest I wonder if I’d be safe from zombies on an private island.

The curse of having a busy brain.

  1. Letters…I asked that question of friends a while back, if anyone had received or written, a hand written letter…or even a post card……it lead to a long thread that lead to a friend that sold pens……I used to write a lot, pen pals, remember those………even as a young adult, there was a magazine called Kerrang that encouraged it…..wonder what ever happened to them….?
