My supercalifragilisticexpialidocious boyfriend turned … five years older than me … yesterday. Happy birthday to him!
The plan was to take him on a VIVID cruise aboard the Sydney Harbour Tall Ships tomorrow night, but that’s been screwed by COVID-19.
Instead, I made him write a story for Drinks Digest during his lunch break about the Virtual Whisky Show that I sent him to on Saturday night. You can read it by clicking here >> https://drinksdigest.com/2021/08/04/thousands-attend-virtual-whisky-show/
Then I popped up to his place with a smoky chili beef casserole and a half case of vino from one of his favourite winemakers, Petersons.
I also contacted Peterson’s and switched my quarterly subscription over to all reds, as those are the ones he loves best.
He poured us a pair of limoncello spritzes and we toasted his lockdown birthday. Then I got busy preparing dinner while he had a Zoom call with his mum, kids and siblings.
I adore my birthday boyfriend. We’ve had such a great almost-seven years together. He is – as the Sandhill Warrior noted in a birthday video message he sent from Muscle Beach – an “awesome human being”.
I’m so glad we accidentally met each other on RSVP all those years ago.
Within a month of that first meeting, I knew he was pretty special. I sent him an email saying that I was a lucky woman.
He wrote back: “We have not yet passed the 4 week mark (that will be tomorrow ) and I feel I have known you a long time yet barely know you at all. Just wanted to say how much I liked being in the house of House with you yesterday. Felt good. Felt real. Felt warm. Felt welcome. Felt bohemian like you.”
That’s how it felt last night being in the House of DD.
It was so hard to say goodnight, head off into the cold, run the gauntlet of the ghost of the Wakehurst Parkway and return to the utter chaos that is my kitchen when I leave the kids in charge of making their own dinner …
Pass me another limoncello spritz … dammit, that’s right, they’re 30 minutes away at my bohemian-like-you boyfriend’s house.
PS The main photo is from 2017 – we look so young!
