You’re the catch

It’s pretty easy to make me cry this week and Kate Hudson got me going with a post she wrote on Instagram about her stepdad, Kurt Russell, who just turned 70.

She said: “I’m gonna gush cause I don’t often about this man but I figure since today he turns 70 I’m gonna let it out. Plus he’ll never see this 😂 I often wonder how how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be. Let me fill you in.

“He’s a pick up your boot straps kinda dad. Don’t cry, shake it off you’re ok, kinda dad. Don’t let ‘em push you around you got this, kinda dad. Don’t listen to the noise you’re doing great, kinda dad. Shake those hips like no ones watching, kinda dad. Always get back on the horse, kinda dad. Never miss a show or game, kinda dad. Kids before anything, kinda dad. Work hard play hard, kinda dad. My girl can rule the world, kinda dad. His laugh will echo through generations as powerful as his concocted stories of grandeur that may or may not be true (may we never know). He’s an original. One of kind. A powerful, intelligent, talented, loyal family man. He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences. And his dedication to my mother and their fight for love forever is as admirable as it gets. I love this man so much! A note for all dads of girls. He gave me the gift of confidence instilling a knowingness in me that I deserved everything I worked for and I knew that he’d always have my back in whatever challenges may lay ahead. When you have a dad who gives you permission to be confident you live courageously. And that’s my insta love letter to my dad who has lived 70 years today. ❤️ Happy Birthday Pa.”

How awesome is that? I think it’s so beautiful that he came into her life when she was five years old and they’ve formed such a special bond. The main pic is a photo of their blended family in the early days.

Goldie first met Kurt in 1966 while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. But she was 21 and he was only 16.

“I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young,” she recalled in a BBC interview. “Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”

The couple finally got together in 1983 while filming Swing Shift, a year after Goldie broke up with Kate’s dad, Bill Hudson.

I’m also pretty in love with what Goldie Hawn had to say about her bloke on Instagram: “Happy birthday baby! What a wild ride. No, we never got married but one thing that continues to grow is our love. You’re a wild one, brilliant, lovable, childlike, perfectly maddening, a father supreme and deeply funny! I can’t imagine my life without you at any age, Kurt Russell. You’re the catch. And you’re all mine.”

Awwwww. I feel like that about DD. He’s all mine! And he’s been so lovely to me this week during my birthday blues. When I think about it, he’s a big reason why I don’t think the universe has a grudge against me, because it decided that we should meet almost seven years ago. It was a very against-the-odds meeting. Me, nervously entering the online dating scene. Him, a bit jaded by it, but intrigued by my terrible profile. Me, into talking a lot and blogging, and him not. Him, into cycling and watching rugby, and me most definitely not.

There were no sparks on that first date. Just a kernel of curiosity.

But pretty soon I was head over heels. He says he wasn’t, but he was acting uncharacteristically crazily. I didn’t know that at the time, as I didn’t have normal DD experience to compare it with. I didn’t fully appreciate endorphin-addled DD, I was just slightly nervous that he was always so full on. I’ve since discovered that his natural state is the epitome of calm and reason. Sometimes I have to ask him if he’s having fun because I can’t tell.

But, all these years later, whenever there’s a new photo of us together, I can’t stop staring at it. I am dazzled by how much I adore that face of his. I never tired of looking at it.

He’s such a good man and he deserves so many good things in his life.

I am beyond delighted that we’ve had the past six and a half years together, they’ve been bulk fun.

A orrential weekend lies ahead. Stay safe and dry and I’ll catch you next week.
