Never give up

Working in the media has given me the chance to meet the most amazingly talented people over the years. Their words have made me laugh, made me cry, made me think. Their artistic endeavours have done the same.

A few years ago, when I was editorial director of Woman’s Day magazine, one of my designers decided to follow her bliss, have a baby and move to the Hunter Valley. Somehow, while juggling it all, she started creating the most amazing artworks.

She invited me to her first exhibition way back in October 2011 and I had an argument with Husband when he refused to go (I wrote about it in a blog called Fighting Words). I can look back now and understand why he wasn’t so keen. The retrospect thing never ceases to shake me about with its teeth.

I invited another arty friend along instead, whose works – such as the one below – adorn my home (David Wills, you’re a legend). And we had the loveliest night.

I was entranced by an artwork at the exhibition, the sweetest etching of a goat.

But, being unemployed at the time, with no sign of a paycheck on the horizon, I resigned myself to admiring it from afar.

Yesterday, while Husband and I painted the deck for the fast-approaching sale (deep breaths, less than a week to go), a long, narrow package arrived on my front doorstep.

It was the goat. It came with a little card that said: “Because a goat never gives up!!”

And I cried and cried and cried.

People are so wonderful – they humble the freaking shite out of me. It’s always the ones going through hard stuff themselves that give the most.

Michele Heibel, you are funny and sweet and I am so lucky to have you on my side. (Do me and her a favour by checking out her website, click here)

Actually, I am so, so, so lucky to have so many people on my side. I keep hoping they will make me a better person in the process.

Don’t worry, dear Michele, this goat will never give up.

Thank you …

  1. I remember David being so lovely, quietly helping my nervous (official photographer for the evening) friend out with her camera settings!
And I love that Finn brothers song, have shed a tear to that one before … x

  2. What a beautifully thoughtful gift. I would have cried too. It must also be a reflection of the type of person you are Alana to inspire that thoughtfulness.
