HouseHunting: My Newcastle dream home

OK, this house doesn’t tick every single “dream” box – it’s not walking distance to Merewether Baths, for example – but wow does it come close. When I told my mum the perfect house had gone on the market in New Lambton, she said “Curzon Road?” and I said “Yes!” so I think it might be famously fabulous.

What the agent says: “One of New Lambton’s most significant homes and land holdings steeped in history. Rarely does a property of such stature come to the market. A testament to refined traditional federation grandeur and contemporary design. Sympathetically restored and renovated to offer the ultimate in cutting edge finishes framed by federation lines that convey the enduring elegance of this era. A very private world set amid extensive and established park like gardens, stately trees, rolling lawns and district and city views in one of the area’s premier locations.”

What I say: The whole idea of moving to Newcastle is to get a house for less than $1million. Preferably much less. But wow, this place is soooooo nice. It has that whole Hamptons/India Hicks Island Life vibe. I am in lurve. Do you think I could channel India Hicks on the balcony? I’d quite like her willowy figure … and business accumen. For a lesson in India Hicks envy go to her website.
