Donuts & cave dives

Normal blog transmissions will resume soon, just a few more holiday posts to go, bear with me …

We ate a lazy breakfast on the back deck of the Yasawa Princess last Wednesday as we gazed at beautiful Blue Lagoon Beach, before hiking across the island to Lo’s Tea House.

Lo’s is renowned for being the world’s most remote donut shop, on Nanuya Lailai Island.

We were served lemon leaf tea and fresh donuts with chocolate sauce, which we enjoyed at rustic tables beside the beach.

A tender boat took us back to the ship and we set sail for Sawa-I-Lau Caves, another famous location from Blue Lagoon.

According to local legend, a young chief hid his lover in the ancient limestone caves, after her family threatened to marry her off to a rival chief. Every day, he would swim into the secret haven with food until the couple escaped to another island together, where they lived happily ever after.

The first cavern features magnificent, soaring limestone walls with light filtering through a hole in the ceiling. The braver passengers, including Emily and DD, also entered a dark, secondary cavern that can only be accessed via an underwater tunnel. I left them to that bold adventure and paddled around with a pool noodle in the open cave instead, while nervously hoping they would make it back alive.

(The blog’s arty main pic from Tourism Fiji shows how the water in the caves looks from below the surface.)

Sadly, our evening visit to the local village of Nabukeru for a seafood dinner was cancelled due to rain, but the villagers brought the food to us instead! Our feast included fish cooked in coconut milk, stuffed crab, roasted taro and creamed local spinach.

I missed a post-dinner screening of Blue Lagoon on the back deck because DD talked me into getting my first massage in 20 years. I am not a massage person, I only booked my last one because my body was battling the rigors of a “geriatric pregnancy”.

The thought of staying still for 60 minutes while a stranger rubs my skin doesn’t appeal to me and I baulk at the cost, but I was having back and hip pain from the firm mattress on the boat, so I gave it a whirl.

Unfortunately I’d decided to regale the dinner table with the tale of going viral for a blog post about dinosaur erotica, so the experience was haunted by the mental anguish of blabber-mouth regret.

But I was in much less pain afterwards and had a better night’s sleep.

Another adventure-filled day in paradise … only one more day on the Yasawa Princess to go.
