Chasing waterfalls

I love waterfalls and on Wednesday morning we arrived at a unique one called Kiti Kiti Waterfall.

Nestled in the lush jungle of West Papua and accessible only by boat, the spectacular natural wonder cascades fresh water directly into the ocean, through a crack in the rocks rather than a river or stream.

(That’s mist from the waterfall.)

We set off in zodiacs to see the waterfall up close and view two karst islands that are home to hundreds of flying foxes.

As our zodiac circled the karsts, the creatures swirled in the air above us and dangled like bunches of grapes on the cliffs and trees.

Then we explored the nearby shoreline, gliding over coral and aquatic life.

It’s impossible to describe the remarkable colour of the water in the area, so here’s a picture of it …

Back on the ship we enjoyed a seafood barbecue on deck with a gun-barrel view of the falls.

Then we returned to Kiti Kiti at low tide for a swim in the crystal-clear water beneath the waterfall.

After floating in the aquamarine magic, we clambered up onto the rocks to be pummelled by the water. It was so intense and shockingly cold that I laughed and laughed as the water poured over me.

DD even went behind the waterfall to the little cave inside. But I was content to laze with a pool noodle, staring up at the jungle and feeling dazzled by being fortunate to travel somewhere so remote – the nearest town is hundreds of kilometres away from this incredible wonder.

Another magical day on our Indonesian cruise concluded with watching the sunset on deck before dinner.

I have no idea why I bring books along on expedition cruises, they remain purely decorative on my bedside table.

There are too many sights to see, people to meet and wonderful meals to be enjoyed.

Song of the day: TLC “Waterfalls”

    1. I booked this one ages ago because I was so keen on the opportunity to visit Cape York and go snorkelling in the coral triangle all in one cruise. I obsessively trawl expedition cruise websites.
