Check out my booby!

I was lucky enough to visit the remote Lacepede Islands, which are about 120km north of Broome, on my recent Kimberley cruise.

The islands support over 1% of the world populations of Brown Boobies and Roseate Terns. The breeding colony of Brown Boobies is possibly the largest in the world, with up to 18,000 breeding pairs, while 20,000 Roseate Terns have also been recorded on the islands.

Other birds breeding on the islands include Masked Boobies, Australian Pelicans, Bridled, Crested and Lesser Crested Terns, Eastern Reef Egrets, Silver Gulls, Common Noddies, Lesser Frigatebirds, and Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers.

And then there’s the visiting wading birds, which include Grey-tailed Tattlers, Whimbrels, Bar-Tailed Godwits, Ruddy Turnstones and Great Knots.

That’s a lot of birds.

And it was magnificent to spend a few hours watching them swirl overhead and gather on shore.

What is it about suddenly becoming a twitcher at a certain age?

Anyways, as a momento of my trip I ordered a framed print of a booby we saw on our visit to the Lacepedes.

It arrived yesterday morning and I am in love! I think I’ll hang it over my bedhead. I’ve asked DD to bring his drill next time he visits.

In other Thursday news, I went to the launch of the International Spirits Academy last night at Hickson House. The academy has ambitions to be the world’s premier education institution for the spirits industry.

The Academy’s patron, Bill Lark, gave a speech at the launch and shared a taste of Lark Distilling’s rare Mizunara Batch 2 with attendees. It was DEELICIOUS.

So were the Hickson House gin cocktails – made with lemon, honey and eucalyptus – and the nibbles were pretty fab too, including garlic prawns and truffle tartlets.

Lucky me!

I wish I could tell you I’m having a quiet one tonight, but no, something unexpected has come up that I’ve never done before in all my 57 years on this earth.

I’ll fill you in on Monday.

Have a great weekend. A major chunk of mine will be spent cleaning the apartment. Blaaaaah.
