It’s happened again

There’s been another dildo incident.

The eldest and I were walking the dogs last night when a woman raced up and knelt at their teeny feet in adoration.

She lavished them with love and asked what their names were.

Charlie and Bilbo.

She looked a little horrified and said: “Sorry, what?”

Charlie and Bilbo!

She replied: “Charlie and …”

Bilbo! As in Baggins. As in Lord of the Rings.

“Ohhhh,” she said. “I thought you said dildo!”

She suggested a name change might be in order.

We’re obviously not living in a Middle Earth-aware suburb.

Mind you, the same thing happened up DD’s way. I wonder where all the fantasy (of the non-dildo variety) fans live?

Fantasy fans wouldn’t be saying Bilbo needed a name change. They’d think it was a super cool name for a dog.

Anyways … in other news … I know they’re very trendy, but I am not a Martini fan. Martinis generally taste, to me, like designer turps.

But I sipped the most delicious ones yesterday at a Haku vodka event.

Haku is a Japanese vodka that’s filtrated through bamboo charcoal for a soft, round and subtly sweet taste.

And it’s converted me to Martinis.

They were fabulous. And plentiful. And I was a little sleepy after I tried a few.

The event was held at a precinct I didn’t know existed – Prefecture 48 on Sussex Street in Sydney CBD.

The six-venue hub contains four restaurants, a patisserie and a whiskey bar by the award-winning team behind Maybe Sammy.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a Haku martini tasting flight and seasonal canapés at the whisky bar, Whisky Thief, hosted by House of Suntory ambassador Natalie Ng.

Then we headed into newly hatted Ibushi for a six-course degustation by Chef Chris Kim (ex-Tetsuya’s) and finished up with a take-home dessert by Dear Florence.

I got a last-minute offer to take a plus one to the event, so I texted my friend Sue, asking if she could like to come along.

She replied: “Ummmm let me check my diary.”

Immediately followed by: “Oh look, I’m free! Sounds unreal xx.”

And it was. Here are some happy snaps (we forgot to take selfies):

Menu highlights included: Sansho gravlax with potato aioli and rice puff; Beef tartare with confit yolk emulsion, hazelnut and rice cracker; Tuna tartare with yuzu kosho, crisky sushi rice and avurga; and toothfish fillet with koji marinade, sumiso and cavolo nero.

However, probably our favourite part of the event was that we were sitting with someone from the satirical newspaper the Betoota Advocate!

She was so lovely and we were hopeless fan girls. We LOVE the Betoota Advocate … Although it worries me that it’s becoming hard to differentiate satire from reality these days.

Have a fabulous weekend.
