It’s a fair bet you’ve heard of Dubai chocolate as it’s gone literally … nuts … on social media.
It’s a type of chocolate bar originating from Dubai, and it’s known for its unique combination of pistachio filling, crispy kataifi (shredded phyllo dough), and sometimes tahini, all encased in a chocolate shell. It has gained widespread popularity through social media, particularly TikTok, due to its distinctive appearance and flavour profile.
I was vaguely aware of its existence, but not particularly excited by it, possibly because I’m only on TikTok when DD sends me videos, as he’s addicted.
Anyways, the eldest’s bestie is staying with me at the moment and it was his birthday yesterday.
I had no idea what to get him as he’s very fashionable. I thought about giving him a bottle of gin, but he arrived with carry on luggage and when I Googled whether you can take gin on a plane, they said the limit was 100ml.
Back to the drawing board.
He loves pistachios and chocolate, so the Dubai chocolate idea popped into my head.
Google was no use, it suggested a few websites where I could order it online, but I needed it soon. After endless searching I concluded bricks and mortar stores selling the stuff were few and far between. And none were close to me.
Oh the hours I devoted to the search before abandoning it and buying him a chocolate and pistachio snail from the local French patisserie for his birthday brekkie.
Last night I went up to DD’s place to have dinner with his sister at our favourite local Italian joint, Lucky and Peps. As I stood beside DD to pay the bill I glanced to my left and saw a sign saying “Dubai chocolate”.
No way! Yes way!
A whole basket of Dubai chocolate bars was sitting there (apparently the owner’s brother makes them), so I bought three, two for Franki and one for me.
The bars were wrapped in gold foil and looked a bit like ingots, which is appropriate given they cost around the same amount.
I tried mine when I got back to DD’s and it was dee-licious. It didn’t taste like pistachio very much, but I loved the texture of the crispy kataifi.
And I delightedly gave Franki his two bars when I got home.
Go me! He was very chuffed.
Blimey my life is full of strange confluences and coincidences.
Have a fabulous weekend.
