I’ve been stung by the political version of an Irukandji jellyfish and can’t shake the catastrophic feelings.
The poison from the highly venomous jellyfish causes you to develop Irukandji Syndrome, which fills you with a sense of impending doom, along with extreme pain.
I am terrified of the little creatures, which are smaller than a five cent piece and see-through.
I am equally scared by the new order that is being created across the ocean.
It has been so painful to watch the decline of democracy.
A recent annual report on the global state of democracy released by Sweden’s University of Gothenburg has found nearly three-quarters of humans now live in an autocracy — where one person has unconstrained power — the highest rate in five decades.
And the report doesn’t even cover the tumultuous events of the past few months in the US.
Head of the Varieties of Democratic project Staffan Lindberg said: “If it continues like this, democracy [there] will not last another six months.”
I was talking to a friend at DD’s party on Saturday and we almost started crying as we discussed the despair we were feeling about the US.
I need to try and not let the sadness consume me.
But it is hard to turn away from the disturbing daily developments.
Are the headlines getting to you?
