So much prep

Last night was very preppy at the Household.

The eldest lugged his goods and chattels down to the garage ahead of my ex arriving this morning with a trailer for the big move to Melbourne.

I went to a body corporate meeting filled with endless decisions about drainage and window washing and rat baiting and hedge replacement.

Then I walked gingerly back upstairs to place a glass of water, various painkillers and an extra long mobile phone cord on my bedside table so I have them on hand in case of emergency.

Wednesday morning without bedside water and drugs was brutal. I tried to get out of bed at about 5am to go to the bathroom and started gasping with pain.

Every little movement set off a spasm of agony in my back and hip.

I took two Nurofen in the bathroom and couldn’t even lower my head to drink a cupped hand of water.

It took me 20 minutes to get myself back into bed because the pain was so intense.

I finally lay there feeling grateful that the pain had reduced to a six out of 10.

Slowly it subsided to almost nothing, so I tentatively rolled over and edged across the room thinking the worst was over.

The worst wasn’t over.

The spasms of pain flooded my body again until I realised the only way to keep the spasms at bay was to stand stock still.

I texted DD asking him to call me when he got up. He rang a few minutes later and I explained my predicament.

He told me to take another two Nurofen even though it had only been a few hours since my last and jumped in the car to take me to the hospital.

Minutes before he arrived the pain ebbed and was replaced by nausea from the Nurofen overdose.

I sat gloomily on the couch and we contemplated our next move.

It seemed a bit crazy to go to the hospital when I wasn’t in terrible pain, so we decided on a trip to DD’s physio, then a doctor for stronger pain meds.

DD’s physio diagnosed an inflamed disc – I’m blaming the heavy shopping trolley I hauled up three flights of stairs on Monday.

He said I’d probably irritated an old injury – I’m blaming my pre-divorce splits accident.

And there’s not much to be done about it other than not sitting down too much and doing very light stretches.

I also stocked up on stronger anti inflammatories plus some muscle relaxants.

All hell had broken loose at work in the three hours I was out of commission, so I managed a few hours on my laptop at DD’s place before the pain got out of control again.

I popped more pills, DD got me a heat pack for the car and I headed home to spend a last, very interrupted night with the eldest.

I was done in by 9pm, so the eldest walked the dogs for me and put the garbage out.

Now it’s Friday and in a short time my ex will be here with the trailer and my life will enter a new era.

They grow up in the blink of an eye.
