Impulse purchases and perfect parties

I was totally knacked last night after hauling a double bed, desk, chair, TV and other assorted household items to the youngest’s first share house.

DD borrowed a vintage ute from his friend D2 – it still had a cassette player in it (!!!) – and we rattled along the highway together, with DD patiently pretending to listen as I prattled about cruises.

Fortunately three strapping lads were unloading a pool table out the front of the house when we arrived so we got them to help us carry everything inside.

I’m not entirely sure why it wiped me out, but I could barely keep my eyes open by 7pm. Must be a sign of old age.

I was pleased to make the youngest’s bed with new flannelette sheets, as she will be destroyed by the time she finally lies down in it.

She’s had a horror trip home. She left her hotel in Rome at 3am after no sleep for a 6am flight to Paris, then spent 12 hours in the middle of the middle row of seats on a flight to Vietnam. That was followed by 13 hours in the Ho Chi Minh Airport terminal, then an overnight flight to Sydney.

Shudder. Shudder. Shudder.

She lands at 8am this morning. I think my ex is picking her up because he feels so sorry for her. I put $60 in her bank account to get an Uber. Mum of the Year.

Speaking of mums, my friend Emily and I were thrilled to sing happy 21st birthday to our friend Fee’s daughter on Saturday night.

Wow, what an amazing party. Fee has the most beautiful home and she’d decorated it with pretty lights, balloons and strings of lovely photos – the place looked magical.

Dinner was inspired too – she booked caterers to make three huge pans of paella. Yum!

And doesn’t the birthday girl look divine?

I felt a bit like an old lady at the party – my hip hurt from standing up for three hours and I kept worrying about how cold the girls must be in their tiny dresses in the middle of winter.

Brrrrr!

The rest of the weekend was a bit of a blur.

While getting sheets for the youngest I was transfixed by a window display featuring a bed made up with a design called ‘Global Traveller’. It’s a bit out there but I fell in love … and it was on sale. I decided to get my first-ever king-sized doona cover as I hate how queen sized doonas barely cover the bed. That involved getting a king-sized doona, fortunately also on sale (I chose badly, it’s too warm).

Plus I flitted around getting my toenails painted brown for the first time, deciding on my holiday capsule wardrobe, walking with my friend Alice, chucking a few things on the nature strip for council throw out and making lamb koftas and Greek salad for dinner on Sunday night.

Actually, maybe all that is why I’m tired.

And now it’s time to take a deep breath and face the crazy week. As per usual, I’ve completely overscheduled myself.

Today I’ll try to convince the youngest to have a nap before hitting the road, then I’ll spend my lunch break taking the eldest to yet another medical appointment for his eye infection.

Tonight DD and I are going to a Ponant cruise information night.

Tomorrow I’ve been invited to the launch of G Flip’s alcoholic fruit juice.

On Wednesday I’m getting various pre-holiday beauty treatments done during my lunch break, then powering out a bit of booze writing after work.

And on Thursday I’m at a whiskey event.

I only have myself to blame for the blur of activity and being totally hopeless at saying no to anything.

Song of the day: Blur “Girls and boys”
