That didn’t last long

DD came out of retirement yesterday, less than two months after going into it.

There’s been a press release about it and everything. Oooh-er v fancy!

He went on a business trip for the new role on his first day. He dropped in for a millisecond on his way to the airport with a few bits and bobs that I’d accidentally left at his place.

The new job has materialised quite suddenly and messed with our travel plans. We will need to recalibrate and reconsider our options. One flight has already been cancelled.

Aside from his drop and run, the apartment was very quiet yesterday. The youngest was at her dad’s place and the eldest was at a piercing conference.

At one point I looked fondly at photos of a beach walk with the youngest at Freshwater last week.

I tried not to think too much about how empty my apartment will feel once both kids have flown the coop permanently.

The youngest and I love it at Freshie. We dream about me buying a retirement apartment above Harbord Diggers where I will live and she will visit. Sexiest retirement village ever, with endless food options downstairs for the future grandkiddies.

The apartments are bloody expensive though, at around $2.1-$2.75 million for a two-bedder.

So I made good on my word and bought some lottery tickets yesterday.

Oh how I yearn to leave behind the every day grind. It would be fabulous to retire to Freshie and travel the world. It feels like an appropriate course of action for a single mother of two adult children who no longer need her tender ministrations every day.

But my little nest egg from downsizing won’t last forever, so I need to source alternative funds. The youngest is a pragmatic person who rolls her eyes at my dreams of winning the lottery, knowing how low my odds are.

Ah well, I figure it’s better to dream big. And you gotta be in it to win it.
