I had the opportunity to go to consecutive functions featuring sparkling wine last night, but I chose to head home after the first soiree.
Admirable restraint on my part.
I knew the youngest was slaving over freshly made pasta and caprese salad and I wanted to give her creations the attention they deserved.
It turned out I could have swanned around for longer as dinner didn’t hit the table until 8.45pm, but my liver thanked me anyway.

I also attended a panel discussion yesterday during SXSW Sydney. It was about the cultural evolution of Sydney and one of the panelists was Justin Hemmes from Merivale. It was weird to see and hear him in the flesh after only writing about him in the past for Drinks Digest. His voice was unexpected, deeper and more resonant than I thought it would be.
He was very excited about how the hospitality scene in Sydney was going off like a frog in a sock since COVID-19 lockdowns.
He said it was unprecedented that all his venues were open seven nights a week, something that didn’t happen pre-COVID-19.
Hip-hop artist L-FRESH The LION said things weren’t quite so rosy for musicians, particularly in the south west of Sydney, which was food for thought. He reckons there’s no money in touring for local artists now and it’s just the big names who are raking it in.
SXSW Sydney has turned out to be quite the spectacular of ideas, opinions and innovations. The city is buzzing with creativity and events. I must make sure to get out and experience more of it next year.
When I got home, I was ridiculously thrilled to find a regular door on my bathroom, which silently opens and shuts rather than folding and squeaking and rattling.
Revolutionary!
The handyman is painting it today, then his work for me is done. It has been a very productive week, with lots of odd jobs ticked off the to-do list.
The apartment is pretty close to being “done”. Part of me would like a fancy new kitchen with stone benchtops rather than Laminex ones, but I think I’d rather spend the money on a couple of holidays instead!
Speaking of holidays, thank heavens its Friday. Have a great weekend.
