Sculpture by the Sea is an annual mainstay in the Household. Before the kids came along I’d go for walks along the Bondi to Bronte stretch early each morning and the weeks when the exhibition was on felt like I was enjoying my own private art gallery.
It’s the most gorgeous trek even without the sculptures. But with them it’s fantastic. And a brilliant family excursion. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
But it’s busy. (And for some freaking insane reason people still try and jog along it through the thousands of people. They even have the hide to look exasperated about their path being blocked. Duh!)
So we went mid-week to avoid the crowds, scored a choice parking spot and bedraggled our way along. (Remind me next time to supervise the clothes the kids pack to change into at the beach after school – they looked like hobos.)
This was my favourite work:
This was Husband’s:
The youngest thought this was pretty cool:
The eldest took her camera and snapped away at them all:
Much exploring was done by my three companions while I fretted about their big, clomping feet:
At first I thought there was a big queue for the portaloo:
But it turned out to be an artwork as well, with a rather amusing soundtrack of a bloke trapped in there while his girlfriend ran off with his best mate.
A collection of glass feet tripping merrily off to the edge of a precipice were a little spooky:
But fascinating nonetheless.
Along the way we met two groups of people we knew. As you do in a town as small as Sydney.
Afterwards we trekked to a sunny outdoor restaurant for tapas, then drove past our old apartment for old time’s sake and reminisced to the eldest about how she smiled for the first time on the balcony.
It was really quite lovely.
Have you ever visited Sculpture By The Sea?
We have been really slack about getting to this since moving to the north shore. Used to love it. Have seen so many photos of that red yoga person in my facebook feed. Lots of people seem to share your daughter’s taste in art! 🙂
The bridge does end up being a weird deterrent
Especially in my case as I have a phobia about driving over it! (Okay with the tunnel though).
This was one of my favourite things to do, oh house I miss Bronte!
We’re you a bronte girl?
A Coogee girl, or really an ex-Coogee partner girl…
We were Bondi dwellers prior to kids
Wish I could have gone this year! Such a wonderful event and you have posted some very cool works that noone else has bothered to. Just love those glass feet and the Portaloo!
The porta loo was hilarious
