Feeling blue

When we lived in New York, I discovered a cheap and cheerful airline called Jet Blue that got us to Orlando and Cancun for a fraction of the price the other airlines were charging.

And they’ve done us good service again to Charleston, well, aside from running 90 minutes late on their departure time (so I didn’t really need to get up at 5.30am).

But this isn’t a sponsored post for Jet Blue.

It’s more of a giggle about the inflight snacks – blue potato chips and blue cupcakes. Not colours I normally associate with being edible, though they appear to be common in the US – blue corn being an actual vegetable that corn chips are made from and, it appears, the same goes for blue potatoes.

But then food hues never fail to surprise me – when we lived in Singapore there were black -skinned chooks for sale at the supermarket. Could never quite bring myself to try them.

Speaking of chooks, there are breeds that produce blue eggs … But that’s just the shells, the insides are garden variety white and yellow.

I’m rambling, aren’t I?

Ah, well, while I’m at it I might as well reminisce (again?) about the green-hued buffet I insisted my parents take me to for my birthday every St Patrick’s Day as a kid. Green mashed potatoes, green spaghetti, uniformly green dessert buffet … I loved it!

As for the holiday, we’re off to a pre-wedding celebration tonight so I might not get a chance to blog over the next 24 hours – hence the blue-food musings.

Can’t wait to fill you in on what a Southern wedding rehearsal entails.

In the meantime – tell me about the weirdest coloured food you’ve ever seen/eaten. Did the hue put you off?

    1. They seemto be about half the price of the other airlines, unfortunately they didn’t have an early enough flight for us going back to New York. As for coloured foods, I’ve always worried a bit about red velvet cake – that’s A LOT of food coloring – is just taking off in Australia though.
