Food porn

Yes, yes, yes! I’ve finally achieved carb-gasm. Thank you Singapore! Before this holiday I hadn’t consumed carbs in any great quantity since Sprog 2’s birth, an event that brought on a multiple disaccharide deficiency (ie an inability to process the sugars in carbs). After swearing off them pretty much exclusively for three years, I’d been dabbling in them pre-holiday, with few physical consequences (other than an expanding spare tyre). So the disaccharide situation is obviously on the wane. Once we hit Europe, any pretence of carb-avoidance went out the window. Bread, rice, pastry and pasta were the standard daily menu. The bread was generally good, the rest was – surprisingly, and definitely not the way I remembered from previous visits – generally average. I resented putting those boring carbs in my body. If I’m going to indulge, I want it to be worth it. Singapore’s hawker centers are deliriously delicious temples of carb worship. The other night we gorged on wanton noodle soup, roast duck rice, roti prata and Nasi lemak, all for less than $20 (gotta love a cheap carb). Yesterday’s lunch was prawn dumplings, prawn noodles and beef rendang. In the afternoon, we headed to a “pot luck” tea with some of my former workmates (Husband and I spent two years working in Singapore when we first got married). Everyone brought hawker food – roast duck, roti prata, noodles, rainbow-hued seven-layer cake made with glutinous rice flower, chicken wings … Divine. We’d only just finished our late lunch, but that didn’t stop me hoovering more down. I have no idea how the Singaporeans stay so thin. It’s one of life’s great mysteries.
PS: Apologies, holiday blogging has been even harder than usual as I’m too cheap to pay the extortionate $35 a day our hotel is charging for Internet access.
