One of my biggest regrets about being sick last week is that it coincided with Sydney’s Northern Beaches being the epicentre of a bioluminescence event.
These natural events see the water glow vibrant blue due to the presence of microscopic bioluminescent algae known as Noctiluca.
Their occurrence depends on factors like tides and times and water temperature. Sometimes many months will pass before it appears again.
I am very very very very keen to see bio in real life. It is in the top 5 on my bucket list.
This is what it looked like at Shelly Beach a few nights ago:

It would be tricky enough for me to see bioluminescence at the best of times as it’s usually at its peak luminosity in the middle of the night. And I am no night owl.
But when combined with a bad cold/flu it was totally out of the question.
If it’s still around tonight I may try and talk the youngest into an expedition.
I couldn’t hunt it down last night because the youngest had my car on the other side of the city and I was at a whisky launch with my friend Oliver from The Whisky List.
The launch was for a new Archie Rose double malt whisky release and I was dazzled by how the owner of Archie Rose and the distiller both looked like they must have been fully 12 years old when they started making it.

Very handsome – and lovely – lads!

And the whisky was pretty fabulous too.
We were taken through a tasting of all the whiskies that were blended together to create it, which was quite fascinating. I love when you actually learn something at an event rather than just hook into free cocktails in a noisy room.
Don’t worry I only had the tiniest of sips.
The venue was a gorgeous basement restaurant in Sydney CBD called The Gidley.

I was fascinated by its rabbit warren of swanky little rooms and delighted by the carnivorous menu.

They also served my favourite cocktail, the Old Fashioned. Yum!
The youngest is allergic to pecans, so it was a rare treat to have pecan pie for dessert. Nom! Ooops, I forgot to take a photo of that.
I rallied during the dinner despite my lingering illness – there is still a bit of thick coughing going on – and became quite the chatterbox by the end of the evening.
I think people were smiling with me rather than at me …
Ah well, it was fun and took my mind off how not fun last week was.
I also managed to pop into my favourite shop – Zara – on my way to the event to pick up a few more capsule items for my upcoming mini-break!!!
It’s now day 10 of whatever I caught and I can tell as I lie in bed – not wanting to get up to walk the dogs – that it is still with me.
Fortunately I have the next few nights off gallivanting to try and fully recover.
Well, unless I go bioluminescence hunting …
