HouseHunting: Penthouse perve

I so can’t afford this place, but that doesn’t stop me perving. When I worked in Double Bay – many bizarre moons ago, there’s probably a blog in it – I used to gaze longingly at this property as I walked down the hill from Edgecliff station. It’s a house on top of an apartment block – how cool is that?

Among my more left-field property desires are to own a private island, just a small one, could be in the middle of a river, doesn’t need to be tropical; or to live in a house on top of an apartment block. The latter offers all the privacy of a freestanding dwelling with none of the maintenance issues.

What the agent says: “Occupying the entire top floor of the ‘Princeton’ Art Deco security building, this dramatic 500sqm (approx) penthouse sanctuary commands uninterrupted northerly harbour views to Manly.

“Framed by vast terraces with a flexible floorplan, double parking and lift access, it will be loved by buyers in its current guise yet offers scope to cosmetically enhance or completely modernise.

“The penthouse encompasses a number of private wings, with its versatile floorplan lending itself to configuration to suit your needs. The accommodation section of the residence currently contains the ensuite bedrooms, the enormous main suite with a travertine spa bathroom. A sitting room can be converted back to an additional bedroom depending on your requirements. Two studies provide further living space to utilise as you see fit.

“All main rooms of the penthouse open to the enormous 279sqm terrace which wraps around the entire home, enjoying views from a variety of aspects. It gazes due-north up the harbour to Manly, west to Centrepoint and east across the leafy streets of Double Bay. A pergola-shaded dining area provides a magical setting for those long lunches or entertaining on a warm night, with the surrounding district lights creating a picturesque backdrop.

“Polished timber floorboards, high vaulted ceilings, ornate cornices, curved bay windows and French doors add enormous appeal. Soak up breathtaking harbour views from the grand formal entry foyer as you arrive home.”
