Fun weekend project: Puppy cupcakes

Did you catch my blog on Cute Animal Cupcakes over at Kidspot's Village Voices? If you're at a loose end over this drizzly weekend - only a day of school hols to go, you can do it! - try making an edible menagerie with the kids. Here's a how-to for one of the designs, Doug The... Continue Reading →

Waldorf Salad ain’t bad

Waldorf Salad has always sounded a bit yerk to me: apple, celery, walnuts and mayonnaise mixed together. Just. Not. Right. But I had some excess celery, apples and walnuts in the fridge prior to my Newcastle visit so I gave it a whirl. Mum was promising to have a barbecued chicken and bread rolls waiting... Totally orgasmic silverbeet and blue cheese gratin

I brought a casserole of this divine stuff to my parents' house for the holidays, as you do, when you are me. We had it with sausages on Thursday night and I'm scoffing the leftovers tonight after a few hours at a wine bar with a lovely Twitter friend. There's been no time to nibble... Continue Reading →

1 pumpkin = 3 great recipes

I was given a jap pumpkin recently. I love edible gifts, much more useful than flowers. And pumpkin is one of my favourite veggies, especially when it’s roasted. But my kids aren’t quite as keen. So I thought I’d experiment with my pumpkin gift and see if I could change their minds. I made Roasted... Continue Reading →

Abnormal behaviour (with pear muffins)

I've often explained that I blog about my innermost fears and idiocyncracies to make people feel more normal about theirs. And it's gratifying to have people tell me "oh my god, I feel exactly the same way/do exactly the same thing". Because there's always this niggling fear in the back of my brain that I... How to make: super-easy gnocchi

It's always been in my mind that gnocchi is nightmarish to make - I tried it once in my 20s and swore never again because it was such a palaver. So, until recently, it was on the list of dishes I never attempted at home and always ordered out, like chilli crab, salt & pepper... Continue Reading →

Ginger beer “sorry” muffins

We had dinner at a neighbour's house last night. Sprog 1 stayed for a sleepover. I'm going to pick her up now. I've baked ginger beer muffins to take as a peace offering, because I shamed myself at dinner. I still can't bear to talk about it. Maybe tomorrow. In the meantime, these muffins are... Freelancing? Pigs might fly

People often suggest I do some freelance writing for extra cash. Who has time for freelance writing when you spend hours baking and decorating cupcakes for the school band's fundraiser cake stall? I certainly bloody don't. Add to that a sick Sprog under foot, a house that looks like a mini-hurricane has swept through and... Continue Reading →

She baked us a pie!

In my early 20s, About Last Night was my favourite movie EVER. Better than Can't Stop The Music and The Breakfast Club combined. I still love it, although even after watching it 500 million times. And I still can't work out what Demi Moore says she's put in the dressing for Rob Lowe's salad on... Continue Reading →

Super-easy orange and currant muffins

This recipe was inspired by an over-supply of oranges in the fruit bowl. I cooked a batch earlier this week and Husband raved about them, saying they were DELICIOUS and more like cupcakes than muffins (a big compliment, apparently). Super easy too. Pureeing the orange with the sugar gives them a really fluffy texture. Recipe:... Continue Reading →
