Recipe: Beef with blue cheese sauce

After a few weeks on the road I was hankering for a home-cooked meal when we got back on Thursday. Just one problem, I had to do the grocery shopping. It's one of my favourite parts of going on holidays: coming home to a mountain of washing and an empty fridge. Soooo much fun. I bolted to... Continue Reading →

Budget slow-cooker dinners

I love my slow-cooker. I can leave a casserole bubbling away for hours while I blog, drive the Sprogs to after-school activities, chat to guests ... I'm also pretty enamoured with how you put cheap cuts of meat into it and they simmer themselves into the most lovely morsels. So I've written a blog for... Continue Reading →

Pock-marked old lady time

Every now and then I cook a dinner that is Sprog-unfriendly. The Sprogs are anti-Thai and Chinese, two of my favourite cuisines (along with Malaysian, Indian, Vietnamese ... I'm a bit of a cuisine slut really), and sometimes I get a craving that must be sated. As a general rule, I prefer to make a... Continue Reading →

Pink bits

I was feeling pretty murderous last week. I pulled a whopping big knife from drawer and went totally berko. There was pink stuff spattered everywhere. It was Pulp Kitchen in the kitchen time. Those bastards at Farmers Direct had sent more frickin' beetroot. Argh!!! I found a recipe for beetroot curry, but that seemed a... Continue Reading →

Stupid, ignorant blogger

Last week I got slammed for supporting Kathleen Folbigg on Mamamia. This week I'm being caned for committing food crimes at Kidspot. Makes me wonder why I work like a navy for diddly squat. This time the commenters are up in arms about me including ingredients such as wheat, rice bran oil and cornflakes in my recipes. Apparently... Continue Reading →

Junk food makeovers

I'm riffing on healthy "junk food" recipes for kids at Village Voices today. That's right, tricking the little blighters into thinking you're feeding them high-fat rubbish when it's really a low-fat meal. Check it out at http://blogs.kidspot.com.au/villagevoices/junk-food-makeovers/ Here's a little something I whipped up on Sunday night, prior to Sprog 1's medical crisis. RECIPE: OVEN-FRIED CHICKEN (Serves 4) 1/2 cup... Continue Reading →

Inside-out choc wheatens

Chocolate wheaten bikkies are yummy, but I can't be bothered with that whole dipped-in-melted-chocolate palaver. So I decided to make them with the chocolate on the inside. Easy peasy! And they were a huge hit with the Sprogs. I can almost convince myself they're healthy(ish) too, as they contain wholemeal flour and wheat germ. RECIPE:... Continue Reading →

The Perfect Apple Crumble

The Farmer's Direct glut continues ... I'm tackling it with a Louisiana-style dinner party this evening with my sister's new bloke. We're having hot crab dip with crudites for starters, oven-fried chicken with mashed potatoes, coleslaw and cornbread for main, and apple crumble for dessert. The apple crumble is fresh out of the oven and looking... Continue Reading →

Recipe: Persimmon muffins

I was a bit stumped when Farmer's Direct sent me three persimmons a few weeks ago. But http://www.sassicaandsalter.com.au assured me they would be fabulous in a persimmon bread recipe, which they kindly forwarded to me. I took their advice and gave their recipe a twist, changing a few ingredients, dropping a few (like the brandy) and turning them into... Continue Reading →

Slow-cook Sunday: Mexican beef in tortilla baskets

I was a bit nervous about serving this to the Sprogs as it contains dried chipolte chillies (ordered from http://www.herbies.com.au). So I went for novelty presentation - a tortilla basket - to distract them from the new flavours. And it worked! They scoffed every mouthful. As it's simmered in a slow-cooker you can use really cheap... Continue Reading →
